I’m interrupting the regular scheduled programming here on the blog (who am I kidding … you guys know I totally wing it!) to bring you a community service announcement:
It’s My Special Day – my birthday!
Like any special occasion in our household, the day starts with coffee in bed and a box of Roses chocolates, and of course, PRESENTS!
I often hear other women lament their husbands never remember birthdays or anniversaries, or if they do, don’t really make much of an effort so I consider myself blessed – the hubster loves the slightest excuse to spoil me rotten, and is a bit of a champion in the gift-giving stakes.
Technically I’m still on holidays til Monday – although I have done a couple of small regular jobs for clients – so I’m going for a massage with my favourite beauty therapist, thanks to the generosity of my kids π .
Other than that it will be a bit of a quiet one, with the hubster recovering from the surgery and skin graft on his ear to remove a Basal Cell Carcinoma. But to be honest, that’s how I like it!
We have talked about going out for a meal with the kids tonight but I’m not sure if hubster is up for it yet, so we’re playing it by ear (excuse the pun!).
I do have a special belated birthday treat lined up for mid-February – tickets to see the Australian Ballet production of Cinderella, with the girls. It’s my first time to see a ballet so I’m not sure if I’ll like it or not, but at least I know the storyline!
The Big Birthdays
Next year is the big 5-oh. The birthday itself will be okay – especially if we manage to book a special holiday (Paris? Canada? Fiji? New York?!) to celebrate (I’m not really one for parties).
But to be honest, I am feeling a bit reluctant about the fact that I will be in my 50’s. I don’t feel that old, and hopefully I don’t look it either! It’s weird really. Thirty didn’t faze me at all – I was loving life with the hubster, our toddler son and six-week-old baby girl.
And I felt fabulous at forty, even though I joked that I ran away to a deserted island for a week (we spent a week at a holiday house on Coochie, a nearby island and our “happy place”).
It doesn’t feel that like long ago that we threw a surprise party for my mother-in-law’s 50th, and now *I’m* nearly at that milestone – help!
So for now I’ll just concentrate on enjoying the last year of still being in my forties π .
Do you have any traditions for celebrating special days? And which birthday has freaked you out the most?!

Have a lovely birthday Janet. A massage sounds wonderful! It’s great that you get spoilt rotten – you deserve it! Just remember that ‘None are so old as those who have outlived enthusiasm’ (Henry Thoreau). I’m sure you’ll love the ballet – it will transport you to a magical place. xxx
Janet Camilleri says
“A magical place” – I love that. I hope so too! My massage was fabulous, I am purring like a kitten (I’ll give Fleur a run for her money!)
Leisa says
Happy Birthday Janet! Enjoy this fabulous year being 49! I know I’m going to! (my birthday is on March!)
I love the ballet. Hope you enjoy Cinderella.

Janet Camilleri says
Woohoo another ’67er!!!! Thanks Leisa, pretty sure I will enjoy the ballet π

Hey there beautiful. Loved your blog. I saw a ballet a few years ago and didn’t cope with it. My free spirit and liveliness rose up within me and I didn’t cope, I got bored. Hope you love it anyhow. Loved seeing your 40th birthday photo you gorgeous thing. I’m looking forward to my 50th next year as we hope to go to Greece, my dream goal. Looking forward to staying with you in April. Have an awesome birthday, love you dearly.
Janet Camilleri says
Oooo make sure you go to Santorini, it’s beautiful! Yes I’m not 100% sure about ballet but you gotta try, y’know?! See you in April!
Emily @ Have A Laugh On Me says
Wishing you a fabulous birthday Janet, I’ve been AWOL from blogging and SM for ages, but I’m glad I saw this! Lots of love xx
Janet Camilleri says
I’m guessing that means you’ve had a lot of paid work, which has gotta be a good thing, right?! My business slowed right down in December and I’ve been on holidays since Christmas, but plunge back into again on Monday π

I had the hardest time when I turned 30 – I wasn’t in my 20’s anymore. Since then, nothing has bothered me like that year, even 50 last year! I’m with you, I chose to go to Kauai rather than have a party. We enjoyed it so much, we’re going again this year – I’m a January baby too!
Janet Camilleri says
Aren’t we lucky to be January babies π … so close to Christmas! Ooo Hawaii, noice π .
Pinky Poinker says
Happy birthday for yesterday you… baby!
Janet Camilleri says
Thank you Pinky, it is people like you that give me the faith and courage that 50 and beyond is great!
