Do you have clothes that you wear out and about – and others, that are just for home?
Home clothes are the ones we reach for when we are not expecting to go out anywhere; and they’re the first items we pull on if we are not feeling well.
They are usually so old and daggy looking that they are not fit for public viewing (heaven forbid if you get an unexpected knock at the door!).
Of course, “home clothes” don’t start out that way. They usually begin life as “going out clothes” or an everywhere dress but as they fade, fray, or fall out of fashion, their supreme comfort factor relegates them to home clothes; and we are hesitant to give them up.
A classic example is this old faithful jumper which I bought before I had Mr 23.
Eventually, I decided it was time to bin it – only for Miss 20 to grab it and take it home. She was so sentimental that she couldn’t bear for me to throw it out – and now it’s part of HER essential home clothes wardrobe!
Home Clothes are for wearing at Home
I was brought up to change out of my “good clothes” as soon as I got home; I guess the theory was that way I wouldn’t stain or ruin them. The lesson really hit home when I was about ten – I insisted on wearing my favourite pink frock one weekend, only to rip a big hole in it while playing outside! I was heartbroken.
But I wonder if at times I took the whole home clothes thing, too far? Back in the day I would even change for the school run – and again as soon as I got home. I wonder if anybody else did/does that?!
I must confess: Home clothes are not so much a thing for me anymore.
Because I now work from home, over the last four years I have made an effort to try and dress up a little, and have invested in filling my wardrobe wiht comfy clothes that still look good. But I still have a couple of things that I probably wouldn’t wear out anymore so I guess that puts them firmly in the “home clothes” category!
Let’s face it, nobody is picture-perfect, all the time. It’s another example of what I like to call #fashionfromtherealworld.
Do you have any old faithful items that you turn to when you are just hanging out at home?!

I still wear that white jumper of yours pretty much every morning as I’m putting my makeup on :-). I pretty much live in pyjamas when I am at home and only change out of them if I’m going out. They’re just too comfy! Though it does cause a few unplanned naps!

I guess home clothes are a (small) step up from wearing your PJs all day …

Your Miss 20 sounds a lot like my Miss 20!

I had a similar experience as a child when I wore my “new” skirt (against my mother’s wishes) whilst playing on the swing and tore a big hole in it. I too was heartbroken. I have clothes that I only wear around the house. They are usually above the knee sleeveless dresses that are cool and comfy. I do on occasion wear them out for a quick supermarket run and you can be sure I meet someone I know on those occasions!

LOL don’t you hate that!!!

You bet I do, especially in winter when it’s daggy trackies and sloppy jumpers necessitating a change if I need to go anywhere in public. I have changed for the school drop off before, especially if I’ve gone back to bed unwell or it’s too hot or too cold! These days I do try and keep a smaller selection of home clothes that are of a better quality rather than loads of super daggy stuff. Working close enough to full time helps!

So glad I’m not the only one 😉

My son coined the phrase “home clothes” for what you change into when you are done battling school, running around in the world, and having to be good. I LOVE my children’s outgrown home clothes and will never part from them. For me, I am a novelist and do most of my work at home — so showering and putting on “outside clothes” is a priority so I can pop out the door — or even answer it — without embarrassment or explanation!

I work from home too Louise but am really strict with myself to get up and get dressed in something decent. Except on the weekends 😉
