Let’s Talk about Home Clothes

fashion for middle aged women

Do you have clothes that you wear out and about – and others, that are just for home?

Home clothes are the ones we reach for when we are not expecting to go out anywhere; and they’re the first items we pull on if we are not feeling well.

They are usually so old and daggy looking that they are not fit for public viewing (heaven forbid if you get an unexpected knock at the door!).

Of course, “home clothes” don’t start out that way. They usually begin life as “going out clothes” or an everywhere dress but as they fade, fray, or fall out of fashion, their supreme comfort factor relegates them to home clothes; and we are hesitant to give them up.

A classic example is this old faithful jumper which I bought before I had Mr 23.

Eventually, I decided it was time to bin it – only for Miss 20 to grab it and take it home. She was so sentimental that she couldn’t bear for me to throw it out – and now it’s part of HER essential home clothes wardrobe!

Home Clothes are for wearing at Home

I was brought up to change out of my “good clothes” as soon as I got home; I guess the theory was that way I wouldn’t stain or ruin them. The lesson really hit home when I was about ten – I insisted on wearing my favourite pink frock one weekend, only to rip a big hole in it while playing outside! I was heartbroken.

But I wonder if at times I took the whole home clothes thing, too far? Back in the day I would even change for the school run – and again as soon as I got home. I wonder if anybody else did/does that?!

I must confess: Home clothes are not so much a thing for me anymore.

This dress has been a favourite since I bought it in 2014 …

Because I now work from home, over the last four years I have made an effort to try and dress up a little, and have invested in filling my wardrobe wiht comfy clothes that still look good. But I still have a couple of things that I probably wouldn’t wear out anymore so I guess that puts them firmly in the “home clothes” category!

Although these days, I pretty much only wear it at home …

Let’s face it, nobody is picture-perfect, all the time. It’s another example of what I like to call #fashionfromtherealworld.

Do you have any old faithful items that you turn to when you are just hanging out at home?!
