For a long time, our son seemed seriously lacking in any driving ambition.
Although he got his Learner’s Permit as early as possible – on his 16th birthday – and soon ticked off the requisite number of hours’ driving, after that, things seemed to stall. (I’ve already shared the story of how the hubster is the chief driving instructor in our house – I’m too much of a chicken.)
Eventually, thanks to a combination of parental pushing, buying his own car, and vouchers for a free driving lesson, our son put his foot to the floor.
As it turned out, he only needed a couple of lessons before the test – just to perfect his driving technique, and to unlearn some of the bad habits his Dad and I had taught him he’d picked up along the way.
I’m happy to say that our boy passed first time with flying colours 🙂 .
Now we just need to nag encourage Miss 17 to get her Learner’s and we’ll start the journey all over again …

YAY – one down, one to go!! For me – one down, two to go but not in the order it was supposed to be!! My daughter got her learners straight away at 16, got her 100 hours up and at 17 had her P’s. She doesn’t own her own car yet and won’t for some time (being a uni student and all). She drives one of our cars. My biggest concern is my BOYS! Both are 21 and neither have their licence. They have their L’s and have only done minimal hours. They don’t seem interested. Strange!! They need a rocket up their @!*@#’s!!
Yeah I don’t understand it either. I was *desperate* to get my licence when I was young!
I have a feeling I’ll be dreading my boys getting their licences when they can. I’ve got a decade to get used to the idea. The freedom part will be fantastic I’m sure!
I got my license when I was 17 and a half. I had friends that got theirs later or earlier. The benefit of them getting their license earlier means the sooner you don’t have to drive them to where they want to go. Congratulations to your son too. It’s a great milestone to achieve as one enters adulthood. 🙂
One word on your kids getting their licence which resonates with me and that is it gives you FREEDOM
Yes, fortunately Miss 17 is very independent and happy to mostly use public transport.
I made sure that I got my licence as soon as was humanly possible by taking driving lessons and a defensive driving course that cut down my learner and restricted time in HALF! Fully licenced in 18 months, in NZ, that was in the 1990s! x
Doing the driving hours with my children …… scariest hours of my life. Three down and one to go.
I agree, scary as we have no control….now we are watching from a distance as our granddaughter is coming of that age. They live semi rural so there’s the added scaryness of that with hills and corners.
I was a bit slow off the mark. I don’t think I got mine until about 19. I had a boyfriend who drove me everywhere I needed to go 🙂

Hi there Janet, I remember it being very nerve racking driving with children when it was their turn. Those years are long gone, now we watch from a distance and I worry as the eldest, our granddaughter very soon reaches that age. She’ll be doing some country driving which scares me, hills and bends and curvy narrow roads.
They were very quick off the mark Janet. Mind you… they were very quick off the mark to lose their licences as well doing silly things like driving with bald tyres and having too many kids in the car after curfew.
I’m always shocked when I hear about kids who are in no rush to get their L’s or P’s. “Back in my day” (LOL) we were in that office the morning we could do it! Granted there wasn’t such rigmarole back then as there is now, we certainly didn’t need 100 hours of driving before we could get our license, although perhaps many of us SHOULD have! If Nick is in no hurry when he’s older, I probably won’t be that upset – I’m sure the worry increases infinity-fold once they are on the roads alone! x Aroha
I had no driving ambition back then too. I got over it by learning how to drive.
I don’t have my license and honestly every time I think about it I feel sick to my stomach. I do think about how much easier it would be with getting around with D..but I also don’t think I could afford the upkeep of a car either.
Thankfully we are a long way off, but I’m hoping my kids won’t take their time! Neither Boatman or I did, so I doubt they will be slackers. I hope 🙂
