How to Paint your Nails like a Pro!

Janet Camilleri · 29/04/2014 ·

I’ve never been much good at painting my nails, but it’s only gotten worse as I’ve gotten older and my eyesight is not what it once was!

But then I read a tip somewhere that I just had to try. Apparently if you apply Vaseline to the skin around your nails, it doesn’t matter if you get a bit slap-happy with the nail polish (as I am inclined to do) – because you can easily wipe it off once your nails are dry.

How to Paint your Nails like a Pro!

Step 1: Apply Vaseline with a cotton bud to the skin around your nails

Step 1: Apply Vaseline with a cotton bud to the skin around your nails. My nail polish of choice this week was “Cover Girl Outlast Stay Brilliant” in Grapevine (and boy did I need my glasses to be able to read the fine print of the colour name!).

Step 2: Paint your nails as messily as you like!

Step 2: Paint your nails as messily as you like! Two coats is usually the minimum for good coverage on your nails.

Step 3: Once the polish on your nails is dry, simply pick off the excess that is on your skin.

Step 3: Once the polish on your nails is dry, simply pick off the excess that is on your skin. Thanks to the Vaseline, it will come away easily!

The Result: One Perfectly Polished Pedicure (or Manicure) …

Step 4: Sit back, relax, and enjoy your perfectly polished nails!

I don’t usually bother wearing nail polish on my fingers as the nails are very weak and refuse to grow a millimetre of white without breaking or splitting … but you can bet I will be using this trick from now on when I paint my toenails!

So now there are no excuses – no matter how shaky your hands, or how strong your glasses are – you can still have fabulous nails even without going to a pro!

Do you wear nail polish often? And if so, do you leave it up to the pros or DIY like me?!

I live in nail polish, it is very rare that I don’t have nail polish on my fingers and toes. My love has rubbed off on Punky as she is always asking to have her nails done too!

A great tip! I rarely wear nail polish either because I always chip it almost instantly!

I usually wear nail polish in Summer on my toenails. No point having it painted on my fingernails though with my line of work. I usually get my hubby to paint my nails if I get them done at home because he is much better at keeping ‘in the lines’. But I will try the Vaseline tip. 🙂

The Vaseline is the secret huh! If I’d only been aware of that little gem for the last thirty years!

Great tip! I haven’t painted my nails in ages but I always have a perfect left hand and my right hand looks like it was painted by a toddler lol!

I pay to have mine done professionally every three weeks (fingers and toes) as if I do it they look a mess! Thanks for the tip, you might have just saved my hubby a bit of money! 🙂

Great tip Janet! It’s true. I don’t do my own anymore. My failing eye sight and unsteady hand contributed! I either get my daughter to paint them for me or go treat myself to a spa pedicure 🙂

Great tip. I’m the same as fair as my fingernails go – they split and chip so easily. Will be trying this for sure.
