Pregnant Pause …

Janet Camilleri · 22/05/2013 ·

(or how maternity fashions have changed over the past 20 years …)

I am loving how Recycled Fashion, Absolute Amy, Yellow Dandy, A Study in Contradictions, and a number of other bloggers are sharing their maternity style at the moment.

The baby making days are long gone for me – my firstborn has just turned 19, my second is now in Year 12. How the years fly by!

So I thought you might get a chuckle over what passed for maternity style in the 1990’s …

Four months pregnant
Four months pregnant, rocking my hubster’s elastic waist shorts and a men’s t-shirt.
Four to five months pregnant
At work, about 5 months along. I made this dress myself – and don’t you just love the hair scrunchie? I heard they’re coming back in!
Six months pregnant
Last holiday pre-baby. Miss 16 thinks this is a very interesting choice of swimsuit and that I should burn this photo ASAP.
Six months along
Bulging out all over in this bikini from my pre-pregnancy days, on that same holiday …
Six months pregnant and on holiday
And again … Miss 16 is horrified by the thongs, the cap and even the dress! I thought I looked very holiday-ish and cool … at the time anyways …
Last day at work
Last day at work, 34 weeks pregnant. I’m wearing my favourite outfit from my maternity wardrobe, a dress by Addable, a label that was all the rage at the time with women whether they were expecting or not!
Pregnancy Number 2
Fast forward 2 1/2 years and I’m about 8 months pregnant with Number 2, while holding Number 1’s hand. Another black baggy tent dress …
Eight months pregnant
I pretty much lived in this cream tube skirt during my second pregnancy. It wasn’t a maternity number but stretched as I did (just like me, it never fully recovered afterwards either).

So what was your maternity style like?!

Oh this seriously looks like my 1995 maternity wear!! Crazy … improved slightly for 1996 … even better in 2004!

Yes it’s a bit sad – people say the 80’s were tragic – what about the nineties?!

I filled it out a lot better in this pic, than I did before I was pregnant!

Love the photos! I was a bit of a cheap skate with my 2 pregnancies and just wore whatever maternity hand me downs others passed on to me.

Don’t worry Liz I had plenty of those – eg hubster’s shorts in the first pic!

Those are fabulous Janet, my favourite is the one on the couch – you look so happy, careful and HOT! Isn’t it funny now how everyone wears tight maternity stuff – I used to wear baggy stuff but then realised I looked more tent-like than I needed to! Em xx

Yes, the fashions sure have changed. Back then it was about hiding the bump – now it’s all about flaunting it almost!

These are fabulous Janet! I had a “Belly Belt” that I extended all my jeans with when I was pregnant, and lots of flowy dresses. x

Flowy dresses rule – so comfy xxx

I think you look gorgeous and a beautiful smile too. My oldest son is adopted (19) and my youngest are six going on seven I lived in maternity pants and baggy tops with them.

I found maternity pants just didn’t fit. They’d slip down, or were too tight, or … leggings were all the rage back then, I exchanged the elastic for a drawstring and they saw me through much of pregnancy number 2!

Wow – great photos! Thanks for sharing them with us (and giving us a little giggle!) and how hot do you look in that bikini shot? Very gorgeous pregnant lady 🙂 x x x

LOL you think?! The hubster thought so and I guess he is the only one that really matters hey!

Sorry I missed this post when you added it to the link Janet! You look amazing in all these photos – just glowing! Maternity wear has certainly come along way, although I don’t think I was very fashionable in the early part of this decade pregnant either! I was chuckling at Miss 16’s reactions to the fashion 🙂
