Quirky Kris Kringle Ideas

Janet Camilleri · 18/12/2015 ·

SPOILER ALERT: If you are a member of my family, click away now before scrolling any further through these Quirky Kris Kringle ideas!

We’d all been feeling a bit ho-hum about Christmas this year, so my family is mixing things up with a Quirky Kris Kringle.

Cherry rum balls

So what is a Quirky Kris Kringle, I hear you ask?

It’s a version of “Secret Santa”, except the idea is to gift your person with something you have:

  • made;
  • baked;
  • found;
  • taken (like a photo, not something stolen ha ha!);
  • written or drawn;
  • pre-loved;
  • recycled;
  • chosen for a giggle.

Instead of costing a lot of money, gifts should be heartfelt, or just plain cheesy and good for a laugh. What a great way to make a stand against consumerism this Christmas!

In theory, a Quirky Kris Kringle sounds great!

In practice, it left me scratching my head for quite a while …

Quirky Kris Kringle Ideas

So, in case you too decide to embrace a Quirky Kris Kringle, here are some ideas to get your creative juices flowing (particularly if, like me, you are not that great at sewing or making things!).

Food:

  • a bowl of my decadent chocolate cherry rum balls (click for recipe)
  • a Christmas cookie gift jar (recipe on the Legendairy website) – these are D-I-V-I-N-E!

Dairy Australia

Photos:

  • customise a calendar, mug, mouse mat, tshirt or other item with personal photos
  • a scrapbook of photos from their childhood, or perhaps a sisterhood photo collage
  • a framed baby photo of their partner (this one is great for young/new couples, who may not have seen them before!)

Handmade:

  • a pair of boxer shorts in a fabric that is meaningful to them, or a “kiddy” fabric (think unicorns, surfboards, cars, teacups)
  • put together a booklet of the silly memes featuring their name (you can have a chuckle at the Janet memes here)

Pre-loved:

  • a pile of books or magazines that you have already read
  • a pot plant grown from a cutting, or a succulent growing in an old piece of crockery

cactus garden

Personal:

  • prepare a joybox
  • a themed box of goodies, eg for the keen fisherman, a tackle box filled with lolly worms, fish, rocks, shells etc

fishing goodies

Of course, you could always head to Pinterest for inspiration too … happy hunting!

Have you ever tried a Quirky Kris Kringle – or will you be bookmarking this page so you can remember for next Christmas?!

    Very helpful post Janet and I did look up my name + meme. I didn’t expect to find anything but I forgot Obama is married to a Michelle! Now I’ll look up Pinky 🙂

I might be a middle aged woman, but that doesn't mean I've lost all interest in looking stylish! I love chocolate, chick lit, cruising holidays and the husbear - and not necessarily in that order wink. I live in Brisbane, Australia, and I'm learning how to fashion a new life now that we have an empty nest - did somebody say "travel"?!
