I couldn’t believe my ears when my friend exclaimed: “I’ve been sacked by my hairdresser!”
It usually goes the other way, although we might not put it quite so bluntly …
Have You Sacked A Hairdresser?
Hairdressers – we may not be 100% faithful to them, but when we find a good one, we tend to stick with them.
There are a few things which might prompt us to “sack” our hairdresser after years of loyalty; price rises and a change of staff are the most common reasons.
I Must Confess: I decided to sack my hairdresser when I noticed the customer service standards had dropped.
For example, the salon promised a complimentary “five minute scalp massage” for clients during the shampoo, something I really looked forward. It made a necessary evil – finding the time to get a hair cut – feel luxurious and pampering.
However, towards the end, I was lucky if it lasted 30 seconds. As a long term, faithful customer, I felt taken for granted.
Then I discovered my favourite hairdresser was back in town, and there was much rejoicing! The delightful Donna comes to our home, and her prices are very affordable. So my story has a happy ending 🙂 .
But have you ever heard of a client being sacked by a hairdresser?!
It seems my friend’s salon had a change in direction, from a friendly local salon, to one aimed at a more upwardly mobile, young, and cashed up, clientele. Prices rose, the decor was changed, and suddenly there was no longer time to fit in long-standing (mature?!) clients who wanted “just a trim”. Unless the appointment included a colour, extensions, foils, or some other expensive treatment, you could forget it!
No wonder my friend felt quite justified in saying: I’ve been sacked by my hairdresser!
(Don’t worry dear reader, I didn’t leave my friend in the lurch – I’ve introduced her to the delightful Donna 🙂 .)
Have you ever been “encouraged” to go elsewhere by a hairdresser?!
Linking up with My Home Truths.
I have a knack with hairdressers. The moment I find a really good one, is the moment they decide to move countries, across the state or break their hand. I’m not even kidding. It is always usually half way through a major hairstyle change when they depart and the next victim aka hairdresser has no real clue as to the vision and I’m back to square one.
I’ve had that happen too Raych, but I’ve been pretty lucky for about the last 10 years x
I’ve been with my hairdresser (except for a short year-long separation) since she was a first year apprentice. I think we’ll grow old together.
That’s awesome Cate!
The struggle is real! I’ve never managed to find a great hairdresser in the last 6 years, but I’m very excited about next weekend………all will be revealed haha!!!x
Looking forward to the big reveal!!!
I haven’t been to a hairdresser in probably 5 years. I really hate people touching my hair. But I’m in pretty desperate need for a good trim. But I resent paying people $30+for just a trim…
I have a friend a bit like that. She also hates pedicures and stuff like that because she doesn’t like people touching her feet. I’m the opposite, I just lap it all up!
I used to love going to the hairdresser for all those ghastly perms in the 80s and early 90s. (Should have stayed away!) Now I’m over it. They’re all like that, overpriced and pretentious. A hairdresser who comes to your home sounds awesome, though.
I had plenty of those ghastly perms too Ness. You never know, they may yet come back in!!!
Oh I love my hairdresser. I would be lost without her and devastated if she sacked me. Btw nice pic
You are one of the lucky ones Natalie!
Oh I was really keen to read this Janet as I am currently ‘auditioning’ hairdressers!! What a drawn out (and hair-raising!) trial it is. I have short hair and it grows quickly. Long ago I learned I cannot be at the hairdressers for more than 30 minutes. BORing…so I ditched hair colouring (expensive too) but I need a style cut each 4 weeks. I truly have been finding it a challenge and the most recent cut I had to take to one side with scissors once I got home. Grrrr. Glad you have a good one! Denyse
I hear ya Denyse, that’s why I ditched having gel nails done, I had better things to do with my time than sit in a salon for an hour every 2 weeks. You are right though, short hair does need much more regular trims … good luck in finding a new hairdresser that “gets” your hair!
I’ve never been sacked by a hairdresser but I have sacked some myself. Having said that I’m looking forward to my next appointment in a week or so. It may be time for a change… 😉
You have the most gorgeous curls Kirsty, I’m sure any hairdresser would love to do your hair x
I know what you mean Janet. I have a good friend who is a hairdresser, so that really helps. It’s rather annoying when they go all trendy and expensive on you, isn’t it?
I used to fall for the trendy and expensive thing when I was a young un. Now it’s more important to me that they “get” my hair – it’s super fine, and just goes lank and limp if not layered, or if it grows longer than my shoulders.
That salon is so rude! I have moved on from hairdressers but right now I am happy. I only go about every 10 weeks, colouring my regrowth in between at home, which makes it more affordable to get foils and colour in the salon. Would be nice if I didn’t have some pesky greys.
Karma Kathy!!!! My friend told me she drove past recently and the salon, which used to occupy two shops, has now reduced to just one. If I’m desperate hubster does a great job with a home streaking kit but for now I’m so glad Donna is back!
Haha! I know just what you mean but I’m like Raych … find a goid hairdresser and they take off to Timbuktoo mid cut and colour!
Oh yes, that’s happened to me many a time. Touch wood Donna isn’t going anywhere this time!
I had so many bad experiences with hairdressers that for 5 years i just grew my hair long and trimmed my own fringe. Then I discovered our fantastic hairdressing salon where all hairdressers are great , no appointments needed , the best colours I have ever had and great prices. ?
I used to do much the same, more to save money than anything when our kids were little. It’s a big saving on one income when you grow your hair long, and cut the fringe yourself! Glad you’ve found somewhere fab 🙂
I stopped going to my regular hairdresser because it was just too pricey for the length and thickness of my hair. I haven’t dyed my hair in over 12 months but I do need a good trim. I don’t really have a regular hairdresser anymore.
You’re right, they CAN be so expensive … I hope you find a lovely hairdresser soon!
I don’t think I’ve ever been to a hairdresser more than once or twice. I’m a loose woman as far as hairdressers go. I have commitment issues. I’d expose the hairdresser though if one tried to sack me!
LOL Pinky!
Yes it can be SO hard to find a good hairdresser! Especially when your hair is not easy to cut and manage! Luckily I have a hairdresser friend as well who is awesome and I got a little nervous she was going to ‘sack’ me when she told me she had had enough of hairdressing after many many years and decided to get a ‘real job’ (her words not mine). My look of shock and horror must have been noted because she quickly added, “don’t worry I’ll still do your hair!”…phew!
LOL my hairdresser friend Donna is the same. She has another job during the week, just does the mobile hairdressing on Saturdays – thank goodness!
I broke up with my hairdresser and had to hide every time I saw her in the grocery store for years. Its a hard relationship.
Oh dear! The perils of using a hairdresser too close to home I guess 😉
I have never been sacked by a hairdresser but I have sacked some. The last one was due to the salon itself being too gossipy. Nothing worse than sitting there having your hair done and the hairdressers are gossiping about someone who just walked out of the salon. While great at doing hair, I found it very unprofessional.
Oh that’s terrible! Miss 19 worked at a hairdressing salon for a while; she also was horrified at what was said about customers after they left …
I just sacked my (mobile) hairdresser today when she quoted me “90.00 for a long haircut and 80.00 for a short haircut”, so I rang an established local salon I used to frequent a couple years ago.
Their price? A mere 35.00, no matter what the length! They happen to be very good stylists and the only reason I started with the mobile one was for convenience, but it seems she’s grown too big for her britches and she doesnt keep up with styles or trends so when you hear her say, ” I dont think that style/colour combo etc would suit you”, what she really means is, ” I dont know how to do that and Im too lazy to learn”.
It pays to do some homework!
Wow $35 is much more like it!
