Shelf Style: Hugzilla

Janet Camilleri · 22/05/2015 ·

Popular, iconic, and ubiquitous – I wish I was talking about my blog, but no, today we’re discussing THOSE shelves from Ikea (again!) with the one and only Hugzilla ….

A cute name and a panda in the logo – I knew I liked Hugzilla from the moment I stumbled across her blog in cyber space.

Meet Hugzilla

Hugzilla has a PhD in Snark, with sub-majors in parenting, kids and kitchen disasters. She has certainly caused quite a stir on the interwebs with her post on the Thermomix epidemic, for one!

1. What room are your shelves in?

They are currently filling two very awkward spaces in my living room, rather perfectly. We’ve just moved and they were in the kids’ bedrooms before, but the new house has floor-to-ceiling windows in their rooms so there was no space to put them. I had weird empty nooks and crannies that needed filling in the main living area. It was design serendipity.

2. How long have you had them?

A few years I think. I had a several of them many years ago when the world first went Expedit-crazy but then the design snob in me got rid of them because that’s the stupid sort of thing that pretentious design snobs do.

Oh dear – nope, too POPULAR now. Quelle horreur!

I eventually punched that snooty design snob in the face and succumbed to my inner-Expedit once again. Great design is great design, no matter how popular it becomes. I also needed them to stylishly house the ever-growing accumulation of random crap that my kids dragged out of the womb with them.

3. What do you store in the drawers/cupboards?

Pretty and useless things! Books, random trinkets, vases. Things my kids aren’t allowed to touch, and for the most part don’t. I maximise their capacity for storing useless crap by creating vignettes on top, like makeshift sideboards.

4. What is your favourite decorator item on your shelves and why?

I’m very fond of my “on trend two years ago” black resin deer head. It’s a limited edition Reject Shop acquisition. I’m also quite partial to the whopping slab of academia that is the “Sociology” book by Anthony Giddens. It’s another pleasant reminder of my penchant for collecting useless things like black resin deer heads, tiny ceramic pandas, oddly-shaped candle-stick holders and Sociology degrees.

5. How often do you change the “look” of your shelves?

Frequently. Constantly. All the time. UNTIL I NAIL IT.

….then I preserve it for all of posterity, or until I bring the next perfectly-coordinated piece of random crap home from the op-shop. I’m not going to lie: I’m a bit of a bower bird for random crap. Expedits and I were made for each other. It’s a love affair for the ages.

Ah Hugzilla, a girl after my own heart – so many things in common in one post: the Reject Shop. Op shops. Random (teaching in my case) degrees. Tiny ceramic pandas. If only I was one quarter as funny!

It’s Your Turn!

250x250xshelf-style-300x300.jpg.pagespeed.ic.eIZHpJ-q6oIf you have a set of Ikea shelves (or another brand) in your home – why not join in the fun? I’d love to feature yours in an upcoming blog post! All you have to do is snap some pics and answer the same five questions as Hugzilla has above, and email them to me at [email protected]. Oh – and you don’t have to be a blogger to join in!

Are you a design snob? Love or hate Ikea and/or the Reject Shop?!
