Imagine not having an Ikea store in your local area.
As unbelievable as it seems, there ARE still places that have to live without the flat pack awesomeness of the Swedish super brand!
Although Michelle from Pinky Poinker lives in north Queensland, and I’m in Bris-Vegas, we caught up in person at the Pro Blogger Event last year (and I hear that she is one of my millions of fans a couple of people devastated by the news that I’m not going this year).
I take my hat off to Pinky. Not only is she the mother of five grown children (and her chihuahua Pablo), she’s a glutton for punishment – because she works as a teacher! (And we all know how much I loved teaching – NOT). I love her chatty, irreverent and cheeky blogging style as she shares “The Adventures of Pinky Poinker“.
Here, she gives us the lowdown on how to manage shelf style when there’s no Ikea within a 1000km radius.
1. What room are your shelves in?
We don’t have an Ikea up here but we do have an A Mart and that’s where I bought my shelves from. They’re in my “multicultural” room where I have an eclectic collection of what I call fine art (but is really just a bunch of cheap stuff which was probably all made in Taiwan).
2. How long have you had them?
About 5 years I think. Over the years we’ve had a few sets of shelves and the ones in the photographs are the only ones we still use. We recently held a garage sale in the lead up to our tree change at the end of the year, and sold a lot of stuff including shelves. The shelves below are just some random ones in my kitchen with my valuable cow collection.
3. What is your favourite decorator item on your shelves and why?
I do like my snow globes (on the bottom shelf, below), particularly the one my daughter brought me back from Paris on her French trip, and the one from London when she went on her UK netball trip. (*I* haven’t been overseas for 15 years … just saying!). But at least I have her wonderful experiences encapsulated in a couple of fabulous snow globes.
I was in a Surf Girl quest when I was 21 and still have the sash which my husband put on the top shelf. It’s a very tacky thing to put there and I think he secretly wishes he’d known me back then, for some reason. All the trophies belong to the kids. I’ve never won a trophy in my life (MAM: I don’t think I have either, Pinky!). I ALWAYS came second in everything so at least I was able to live vicariously through my much more successful children.
4. How often do you change the “look” of your shelves?
I don’t but my husband, Scotto, is always switching everything around. Back when the kids were home we had two sets of shelves with five sections in each. One set contained each of their school bags, and one set was all of their individual clean washing which they were supposed to empty and take upstairs every day. It was a very organised set up and would have worked a treat if they’d followed the rules!
Can I make up my own question? (MAM: Of course!)
5. Why do you collect snow globes?
Because it’s an excellent way to ensure your children think about you at least once during their expensive overseas junkets funded by yours truly.
It’s Your Turn!
If you have a set of Ikea shelves (or another brand) in your home – why not join in the fun of shelf style? I’d love to feature yours in an upcoming blog post! All you have to do is snap some pics and answer the same five questions as Pinky has above, and email them to me at [email protected]. Oh – and you don’t have to be a blogger to join in!

Thanks for inviting me to guest post Janet. I can see I’ve been inundated with comments 🙁
I am disappointed you’re not coming to ProBlogger this year. Perhaps you’ll change your mind??

They must all be shy of your awesomeness Pinky, coz I just checked my stats and I’ve had the most blog visitors today out of any day this week (and normally Mon/Tues are my big days!) x

That’s a very impressive snow globe collection, Pinky. I’m now regretting throwing out all of the ones I’ve collected over the years. Meanwhile, I want to know more about this Surf Girl business 🙂
