Should I Have Plastic Surgery?

Janet Camilleri · 29/01/2018 ·

I must confess this is a sentence I never thought I would be saying: I’m thinking of having plastic surgery.

Nothing too major – just a little mole removed off my forehead.

It’s not cancerous or anything, so it would purely be for cosmetic reasons. Here’s how I came to consider having it removed …

How I Came to Consider Plastic Surgery

BCC mole question

About 3 or 4 months ago, I noticed a tiny scab on my left cheek – like I’d picked at a spot. I assumed it would clear up in a few days as spots generally do.

Except it didn’t.

It just didn’t get any better, so being very skin cancer aware, off I toddled for a full skin check at my local mole scan clinic. I even pointed it out to the doctor as a concern, and was assured it was nothing to worry about.

Except … I *was* worried about it. So three weeks later, when I had to see my own doctor about something else, I asked for a biopsy.

I’m so glad I did, because just before Christmas I learned it was indeed a Basal Cell Carcinoma (“with legs”, as my doctor described it).

Because it’s on my face, I was referred to a plastic surgeon, and will have it removed at the end of February.

At the same time, I asked the surgeon about the possibility of having the mole on my forehead removed and he is happy to include that in the procedure.

I’ve had this mole for as long as I can remember – you can see it in the photo below, from when I was about 13. It’s slightly raised, I think it looks halfway between a wart and a mole.

I’m pretty sure I can remember my mum had one in much the same spot. I never thought it was ugly or that she should get rid of it, it was just part of who she was.

To be honest this mole doesn’t bother me hugely, but, over the years a couple of people have commented on it, which has made me think about getting it removed.

I remember asking a doctor about it years ago, and basically being told it was too tricky and as I would end up with a scar there instead, what was the point?

After discussing with the plastic surgeon last week, it’s true, I will end up with a faint line on my forehead. But hey, lines on our forehead is pretty normal for most middle aged women (unless they’ve had botox)! Plus, the surgeon I’m seeing is renowned for doing neat work that leaves minimal scarring.

I asked the hubster for his opinion, and he said he doesn’t mind either way but if it was him, he would get it removed.

When I mentioned it to Miss 21 she was horrified that I would even consider getting it removed!

So that’s my dilemma. I still haven’t 100% decided so thought I’d ask you for your thoughts and opinions … should it stay, or should it go?!

All I have ever noticed is your beautiful smile. So I would say only if it truly bothers you. Personally only want things cut off or out of me if they really have to be for medical reasons, but I’m just phobic about medical procedures… So yeah, I’m basically no help am I?

Hope you decide whatever is right for you. ?

Thank you Ness 🙂 it’s probably a lot more obvious in person, in 3D …

Does it only bother you when others comment on it? If so then it doesn’t sound like it’s worth surgery, it sounds like others are influencing you.

I wouldn’t bother if it was something I had to go in specially for, but seeing as it can be done at the same time … I’m thinking I may as well.

I have a prominent mole in a similar place and have asked my dermatologist about having it removed. I was put off by the idea that I’d have a scar there but if I was in your situation I’d go for it and have it removed, especially if your plastic surgeon is a very good one. Hope it all goes well!

I will have to go and look at your photos now June, because I don’t remember it at all!

I’d be put off by the idea of possibly scarring after the procedure, but then I am someone who gets annoying dark coloured scars on my skin that take forever to fade. I say if you’re not like me and it would make you feel good then go for it! I’d say you shouldn’t care what other people say, but lately I have had some sensitivity about some skin issues so I know it’s easier said than done! If it helps, I have never noticed it before in all of your photos! x

Thank you Kez, I think it’s more noticeable in real life. I’m thinking I will get it removed, may as well.

Why not is my thinking. You will be at the perfect time and place so I would go for it.

Thanks Jan, that’s pretty much my thoughts too.

I had a big mole cut off my forehead and near my nose, same as you I had them since I was little and they just got bigger and bigger. They shaved them off and I have a small mark but I was really happy with the result! No dint at all. If it bugs you I say do it.

Mine was getting annoying and would bump on things and scratch it.

Now you’ve reminded me I have one on my back I should get rid of at the same time!!!!!! For the same reason, I’m always bumping and scratching it.
