Snapshots from Pisa

Janet Camilleri · 16/09/2015 ·

There are some sights that that are even more amazing when you see them in person.

The leaning tower of Pisa is one such sight. Nothing could prepare me for the impact of actually seeing it for myself – and it really does lean! We were fortunate to be able to climb up to the top of the tower, as for several years it was closed to the public to allow engineering works to consolidate the foundations.

It reminded me of a fancy wedding cake 🙂 … almost good enough to eat.

We stayed in a quaint little hotel, about 200 metres walk from the tower itself which meant we got to go for a stroll and enjoy the changing vista of morning, noon and night.

Our Hotel

Although the building is a couple of hundred years old, it’s been fitted with all mod cons, including ensuite bathrooms and a lift …

Very thankful for the lift when we were lugging suitcases!

The name of the hotel means “place of flowers” so no surprises the decor featured a floral motif

This building looked like cameo jewellery!

There is one vivid memory from our time in Pisa which I don’t have a photo of … they drive on the right hand side of the road in Italy, which can take some getting used to even when you are a pedestrian. As a result I nearly got skittled by a bicycle when I went to cross a quiet street (just not quiet enough!) – thankfully the hubster had his wits about him and pulled me out of harm’s way! It’s drilled into us from infancy to “look to the right, look to the left, and look to the right again” before crossing a road – in fact I’m sure I remember singing a song about it. Trouble is, the reverse is true in many foreign countries – Italy included!

I hope you’ve enjoyed my snapshots from Pisa. I’m feeling a little jealous as just this week Miss 18 booked her flights – she’s visiting the UK and Italy with her boyfriend and his family in March! Although if she has to go gadding about the world, I’m just relieved she is doing it in good company 😉 .

Meanwhile, the hubster and I are starting to think about our next big trip, which just might be to the USA and/or Canada …

I’m feeling a little jealous too! I’d love to go travelling again. I loved Pisa when I was there. Such a pretty little town. I remember there were lots of people selling wallets and belts at markets there. It’s funny what you remember 🙂

There were heaps of hawkers when we were there too – mostly selling selfie sticks and other tourist tatt. I don’t really remember, we tried not to encourage them, they were quite annoying actually!

Pisa looks like an interesting place. One more reason to put Italy on my bucket list I think!

Venice and the Leaning Tower are musts on any bucket list, I reckon 🙂
