On the way home from our trip to Europe, we stopped for a weekend in Singapore.
I must admit, I was a bit overwhelmed when we arrived. It was so hot, so crowded, so noisy, so … well, Asian! I think I was ovecome with a bit of culture shock! It didn’t help that I was feeling jet-lagged and my feet had swollen up after the fourteen hour plane trip from London.
We went wandering through some markets looking for some dinner, an experience I found very offputting, thanks to the chicken necks, ducks’ beaks, pig trotters and other oddities hanging in restaurant windows …. fortunately the hubster came to the rescue and ordered me something which was very tasty. I don’t know what it was and I probably don’t want to! I know we have Asian food in Australia, but we must have a very Australian-ised version of it, because this was something else entirely!
After a good night’s sleep I was feeling much better and we made the most of our weekend in Singapore …

Singapore Merlion & other Sights
Marina Bay Sands Hotel, Casino & Shopping Centre
Topped off by what looks like a cruise ship, this amazing complex has to be seen to be believed.
Sky Gardens & Supertree Grove
We loved the light show in the supertrees!
You might have caught a glimpse of some pale pink bougainvillea in one of the photos near our hotel – I’ve never seen it that particular colour before. I really wish I had some photos of the drive to and from the airport, as the bougainvillea along the roadways was truly a beautiful sight and will forever remain a key memory from our Singaporean experience!
Have you ever been to Singapore? What stands out in your memory?!

I definitely loved the pretty trees along the side of the road. The light show was amazing. Orchard Road was fantastic! I also loved the hawker’s markets where you could get cheap fresh juice and yummy Asian treats 🙂 I wish we’d had longer there so I could have shopped/eaten up a storm!

We didn’t get to Orchard Road – next time!

Looks like you had fun exploring. I know what you mean about arriving in a busy Asian city suffering from Jetlag – the culture shock is intense and requires energy! We were in Singapore backpacking way back in 1983, I bet it’s changed a lot in that time.

For sure! The Marina Bay Sands complex is only a couple of years old and has become tourist central.
