Snapshots from Venice

Janet Camilleri · 29/07/2015 ·

I’m sure the beautiful Italian city of Venice needs no introduction.

We fell in love with Venice – the many waterways, the bridges and piazzas. There are no roads; the only way to get around is on foot or by boat! It’s difficult to even imagine, which is why it is such a fascinating place to visit.

The hubster joked that they had a rule that nobody was allowed to modernise or even paint the outside of their buildings, because otherwise it would detract from the whole shabby chic atmosphere of the place!

It’s impossible to sum up our experiences in words or pictures; still, here are some of our favourite snapshots from Venice.

Checking the map
Arriving in Venice – from here we had to walk to our hotel!
In Venice
Can you see how excited I am, on our first day in Venice?!
Our hotel in Venice
This is our hotel – luckily it was only about 5 minutes walk from the bus terminus
That's our hotel behind me and across the canal
The terracotta building behind me is our hotel

Venice is a city of romance
Some random busker was handing out roses 🙂
Vaporetto stop on the Grand Canal
A vaporetto (water bus) stop on the Grand Canal
Coffee in Piazza San Marco
It’s worth paying the exorbitant prices to have a coffee at the Piazza San Marco
PiazzaSan Marco and St Mark's Basilica
The queues to go inside St Mark’s Basilica. Needless to say we skipped that particular attraction!
Bakery in Venice
We did however make time to visit a bakery nearby. If macaroons are the flavour of the month here in Australia, the Italian version is a massive meringue!
Wandering through the streets of Venice at night

“They” say you haven’t been to Venice until you’ve gotten lost … being a Friday night, a market was in full swing. We started exploring all the stalls and thought we knew our way back to the hotel, but what we didn’t realise was that once it got fully dark (at about 10pm) and the street stalls were all been packed up, it became almost unrecognisable! We did eventually find our way home but it took a while 😉 .

Which one is your favourite from my snapshots from Venice?

You can probably tell Kathy, that Venice was probably one of my very favourite stops on our trip. Would love to go back!

I would love to go to Venice. It reminds me of James Bond movies. I’m sure it would be very romantic. You both look so happy in the photos 🙂

The roses of course! I stayed in Venice twice. Both times I camped at Fusina which you could only get to by boat. It was a mosquito haven. Your hotel looks much nicer!

loved the pictures. We where in Italy in may this year in Rome. I have previously been to Venice in 1999 seems like a lifetime ago. I left with not much positive to say about it, but maybe worth another look after seeing your pics

My 16yr old daught and I are going to Venice for 3 nights in January. She was excited because thats where the vampires were in Doctor Who, 🙂 but I think she will come away with an appreciation of the place and the culture. Nice pics!
