5 Styling Tips for Fine Limp Hair

Looking for styling tips for thin hair?

You’ve come to the right place!

Fine limp hair can be a real pain. Bobby pins, hair clips and combs just won’t stay in; make a ponytail and it’s so scrawny it just looks pathetic. Getting any sort of body or volume in your hairstyle, let alone making it last all day, is a serious challenge. Skip even one day of shampoo and your hair looks like an oil slick – it’s so lank and greasy. Not a good look!

Fortunately these days there are some great options such as hair toppers, clip in extensions and ponytails available, to help bulk up and disguise thin hair.

My hair is looking a bit flat and ordinary at a special event a couple of years ago

But you can also do a few things with the (little) hair you have to make the most of your fine limp hair. It’s taken me nearly 50 years but now if I want to have a good hair day, I know just how to go about it! (Of course working from home I don’t necessarily bother every day … only if I am going out, or feel like it.)

My Styling Tips for Fine Limp Hair

1 – Stop Using Conditioner. It may make your hair feel silky smooth, but that’s why you can’t keep a hair clip or bobby pins in place. Plus, it weighs your hair down, making it look lank and limp. A revitalising spray (my fave is from KMS) helps to get out any tangles after washing, and still adds moisture to your hair.

2 – Blowdry your hair upside down. I always start the blowdrying process by flipping my head upside down, to get some air and volume into the roots. When I flip up the right way, I use a big brush and the hairdryer just to curl the front ends under.

3 – Use a texturising spray. My Absolute Favourite Hair Product for styling fine limp hair is Alberto V05: Give Me Texture. Unlike some I’ve used, it doesn’t make hair sticky, and really gives me the oomph and just the right amount of tackiness to aid in styling. Even better, it only costs about $7.

4 – Add volume with a straightener. I like to use my straightener to flick my (long) fringe away from my face, and then I loosen the curl with my fingers; and I also use the straightener to add volume in the crown. (Funny, but I don’t actually use it to straighten my hair!)

5 – Finish with your favourite hairspray. Even if your style or curl relaxes a bit throughout the day, your fine limp hair will still have volume instead of looking like it’s plastered to your head.

BONUS TIP!

Foils and/or highlights. For some reason, fine limp hair seems to “plump up” and behave much better when it has been colour treated in this way.

Now that I’ve finally mastered the art of how to style my fine limp hair, I no longer yearn for thick hair, or riotous curls. At least mine is quick and easy to blowdry!
