I’ve never really been interested in getting inked, but recently I’ve actually come across a couple of tattoos I’d like.
These days, tattoos are much more mainstream and acceptable than they were a couple of generations ago. Even Mr 21 and Miss 18 have one. But I’ve never been interested.
Could I be having some sort of midlife crisis?!
Tattoos for Middle Aged Women
I blame this one on the reality show, “Inkmaster”. Although I’m not a fan of tattoos, I do enjoy this show and seeing the amazing artworks that the contestants produce on their “human canvases”.
Garter Tattoo
One week the challenge was to tattoo a garter, and blow me down, it actually looked pretty good! Feminine, a bit sexy – and unless you were wearing a bikini, nobody except your hubster would ever see it. Now I’m not into pain, so I probably won’t ever do anything about it, but I shocked myself by actually considering it for a minute!
Eyebrow Tattoo
My bloggy buddy, Jess at Peachy Keen Mumma, bravely went under the knife inking pen and lived to tell the tale – she got her fair eyebrows tattooed. I can’t tell you how much I love love LOVE this idea! Being blonde, I totally understand this – I’ve written before about how I love well-groomed eyebrows. I quickly took to the trend of using a brow pencil; but imagine having great brows without having to draw them in every morning. Love it! The results were amazing and totally natural looking.
My only question is – what happens when your brow hairs go grey (I’ve already had a couple appear, that I have just as quickly plucked out!)?
What sort of tattoo – if any! – do you think is appropriate when it comes to tattoos for middle aged women?! What would tempt you?!

I’ve been umming and ahhing about the eyebrow tattoos myself. I’m suffering from the over plucking of the 80s and after years of trying to grow them back, looking for other options.

Miss 18 told me today that it is quite expensive and only lasts 18 months. Not sure if that’s true or not though.

I have thought about tattoos on and off since hitting adulthood. But honestly? I liked them more when they were just a bad ass thing to do. Now everyone’s got them, they’ve lost their appeal. I’ll never say never, but it would have to be an idea that had stuck with me a long time. Those things are for life!! Maybe I’m just scared of commitment. Or of not being original.
My friend’s mum (and long time family friend) surprised her on her wedding day with a tattoo on the back of her shoulder that symbolised her relationship. She was in her late 50s when she got it and she was SO not the person you’d predict would get a tatt! However, that was the point – her way of showing that she supported her daughter and her new marriage (the artist was her new son in law)!! I figured it’s pretty cool to get one later in life – you already know what it will look like when you’re 50!

Wow that was an amazing gesture to allow her new son-in-law to ink her!

I got my first and so far only tattoo when I was 39. It was a celtic Mother & Daughter knot in honour of my Mum and i got it on my lower back. Hurt like a B for sure. I got it in that spot as it rarely changes no matter how “curvy” i become and if one day I don’t like it anymore I don’t have to look at it! I still love it though. I wanted to do it as it means something to me. I’m glad I did and may get another one when I decide what it will be. ๐

That’s beautiful Sharon, I love the story behind your tatt.

Tattoos are so personal (except for eyebrows – this is scary, looks well if they stuff-up!).
I just worry about older skin going wrinkly and making the image or words impossible to read…each to their own though! xx

Any tattoo getting stuffed up is a worry!!!!

Janet – Thank you so much for this post. I’m so flattered. WOW! It’s super generous of you. I’ll share the post in the next couple days. Thank you!
That’s a good question about eyebrow dyeing. I’ll have to ask Melissa when I see her next.

Your post inspired me!!! I talked to Miss 18 today and she told me eyebrow tattooing only lasts about 18 months – I wonder if that’s true? If so I don’t need to worry about going grey!

I do not like tattoos at all! But I guess I might consider tattooed eyebrows, but I would be too scared to do this in case I end up looking like Frankenstein’s bride! The only other tattoo I would consider is important medical information tattooed on my wrist, but only if it were life threatening.
