The Struggle to Pick a Pic

Janet Camilleri · 19/10/2020 · Leave a Comment

Unless you are a blogger, I’m not sure that you understand just how much of a struggle work it is to pick a pic to share with you in a social media or blog post 😉 .

the pic I picked on the weekend
Here’s the image I actually shared on my social media accounts. I’m wearing Target Belle Curve pants (last season), Witchery t-shirt (thrifted), and the jade necklace is a souvenir from NZ cruise back in 2012.

The whole coronavirus thing has really put a damper on my enthusiasm for taking pics of my “fashion from the real world“. Not going out much means not taking as much effort with my dress, though I haven’t quite been working in my PJs. I’ve been missing the opportunity to wear some of my nicer outfits, weekend wear gets a bit boring when you’re wearing it 7 days a week!

And don’t get me started on my pandemic hair style. I can’t remember the last time I went to the hairdresser! I’m actually not minding my longer locks at the moment, they’re very easy to look after – a ponytail or bun and I’m done. I do worry that a ponytail might look a bit ‘young’ on me, and when I look in the mirror sometimes and I’m wearing a bun (even if it is fashionably ‘messy’) and glasses, I can’t help but notice more than a passing resemblance to my grandmother.

But I digress … I was telling you about how hard it is to get any decent pictures of myself.

There is one thing that I’m enjoying and that’s my new iphone 11, it definitely takes much better photos. However … for every image I actually post, there are usually 50 duds that I then have to go back and delete.

And even when I do have a shortlist, I then have to carefully scrutinise them on my PC because now that I’m a certain age, even with reading glasses I just can’t make out the finer details that really matter – like whether the shot is blurry, or if my eyes are actually closed.

To illustrate my point, here are the images that made the finals recently, for a “fashun pic” which I posted on my Facebook and Instagram accounts … and why they didn’t make the cut!

weekend wear 2

This pic (above) isn’t bad. That said, it isn’t great either … I don’t like that you can’t really see my eyes.

weekend wear laughing

A big smile! I could even be laughing in this one but it just looked too fake to me.

weekend wear looking far away

Now this might be a matter of personal preference, but I tend to prefer pics where I am actually engaging with the camera and audience rather than staring off into the distance …

Yay! You can actually see my eyes in this one – no squinting. I managed this with a trick I picked up along the way: lower your eyes and look up just as the pic is being taken. However it seems I forgot to smile, so it was a ‘no’ from me.

weekend wear 3

Above is the first runner-up. My feet look a bit awkward but it was a possibility … and below we have the lucky winner again. I like my facial expression, I’m not squinting, it doesn’t look too posed (compared to the typical ‘hands on hip’ style), and there are no obvious lumps or bumps.

Wanna know something funny? It was actually the FIRST picture I took!

I live in Brisbane, Australia, and I'm learning how to fashion a new life now that we have an empty nest - did somebody say "travel"?!
