You may have seen the happy news on social media over the weekend: Miss 21 and her man are engaged!
On Friday afternoon we received the below text from our daughter:
What followed was a whirlwind of happy tears, texts, phone calls, social media, hugs, and catching up with the happy couple themselves on Saturday evening.
Here are just some of the many questions which have cropped up:
Were you surprised?
Not particularly 😉 . You see, her boyfriend oops fiance (!) approached the hubster a couple of weeks ago to ask for our daughter’s hand in marriage (hubster filled me in later that night, and I must admit my eyes leaked. No, I wasn’t crying, they just leaked!).
While it’s not really necessary these days to approach the young woman’s father beforehand, we still appreciated it – it’s a thoughtful and respectful thing to do. Mind you, it took hubby a bit by surprise and he didn’t quite know how to respond – I gather he came out with something like “Yes of course, it’s your decision really!” LOL. In hindsight he could have told him that we expect him to take good care of our daughter, or else ….
So yes, we knew it was coming – we just didn’t know “when”. And we didn’t know if our daughter knew, so we couldn’t say a word to her either.
We thought it might have been on our daughter’s birthday next month, or even her fiance’s 25th birthday which was earlier this month … but just had to wait and see.
As parents, what do you think?
We like Callum a lot!
They seem well suited, and are able to communicate, which is so important to the success of any relationship – so we figure they have as good a chance as any couple 🙂 . We are happy with our daughter’s choice, as her fiance is a “good bloke” and we all get on with him – but it’s not about us. What’s most important to us, is that we can see that he treats our daughter well.
And, he IS a crazy cat man so bonus points for that!
What does your son think?
Mr 24 is delighted to have a “brother” at long last!
What about the ring?
I believe Miss 21 dropped lots of hints about what she wanted … it has a 1 carat diamond in a halo setting with pave diamonds on the band. Pretty fancy!
Will they have an engagement party?
Probably at some stage; most likely in the New Year. Miss 21 has been looking into cocktail party venues close to the Brisbane CBD …
And when’s the wedding?
In a year or two. For the moment they are just happy to be engaged! Miss 21 has told me she’s not a fan of of strapless wedding dresses, or the off the shoulder and/or mermaid/fishtail styles that are so popular at the moment (There goes any ideas I might have had, that she might want to wear my wedding dress. Just kidding – of course she can wear whatever she chooses!).
What do your grandkitties think?
Annabelle, Delilah and Egg (Elizabeth) aka The Floof Sisters are very happy that their parents are finally making it official!
How did he propose?
They had a few days off last week and went for a drive to Mt Tamborine (a scenic spot in the Gold Coast Hinterland), and ended up going for a walk to Curtis Falls. Miss 21 was filming the waterfall for Instagram and when she turned around, there he was, down on bended knee!
How did she respond?
Apart from the obvious “YES!”, apparently she kept asking, “Are you sure?!” LOL.
And finally, Miss 21 gave full approval to me writing this post. After she read the draft, she said:
“Also you have to mention that I am HAPPY!! He’s my best friend and I love him to bits!” which is good news indeed 🙂 .
All in all, it’s been a massive week, what with Mr 24 finishing the last exam in his Commerce degree, and now this … what next in the adventures of this Middle Aged Mama and family?!
I just have one final question: how did I get old enough to have a child that’s engaged?!

I know it’s a cliche, but seriously, it feels like this was “us” not so very long ago (okay nearly 30 years now!). As a parent, you just want your kids to be happy so we are pretty chuffed!

How wonderful to marry your best friend. That’s the most important thing, to find someone kind, who treats you well.
My first thought was how young they are, until I remembered I was 23 when I got engaged, and married at 24, so not.much difference!
Exciting times ahead. Congrats to all! ??

I know right … I was 22, and my Bear was 20 when he proposed!

They were supposed to be heart emojis not question marks…LOL

There is no greater happiness for a parent than to see their child happy 🙂
Deborah Stengert says
Just beautiful. I love Miss 21’s additional comment “I’m happy”. What parent doesn’t want to hear their child say that and particularly when it describes how they feel about one of life’s most major decisions. It’s not easy raising children, but you have always engaged your mama role with courage and grace. Congratulations to all!
Janet Camilleri says
Thanks for the lovely comments Deb, like any of us I’ve just done the best I can and prayed a lot!
