Kidspot Voices of 2015: Is it Okay to Nominate Yourself?

Janet Camilleri · 20/04/2015 ·

Emily at Have a Laugh On Me started the discussion over on her blog: is it okay to nominate yourself for the Kidspot Voices of 2015?

Kidspot Voices of 2015: is it okay to nominate yourself?

Each year, the Kidspot website runs a competition to decide the top bloggers in Australia.

Emily confessed that this year, no, she probably won’t. Of couse she is secretly hoping a reader will nominate her … pretty sure she has that in the bag 😉 !

I must confess, it got me to thinking … there shouldn’t be a stigma attached to nominating yourself.

3 Reasons Why It’s Okay to Nominate Yourself

1. You’ve got to be in it to win it. Sure, you could cross your fingers and hope somebody else will nominate you (which is what I did last year, and was totally stoked when somebody did!) – but why take the risk?

2. It’s FREE! Unlike many writing/photography competitions, it’s free to enter!

3. It’s how things are done in the business world. In my previous workplaces, it was standard practice to nominate your department or project for awards. Who better to know what it was all about, the goals, the planning, the strategies, the end results? When I worked in Council, my department won an award for a project … the officer resonsible for the project was the one who completed the nomination. One of my current clients asked me to help them prepare an application for a national award … and then I remembered the Cert 4 in Small Business Management I completed last year. We prepared our business plans as part of the course – and our instructor explained that some of the material could be used WHEN (not if!) we entered our businesses in any awards.

Finally, if you still need convincing, check out this post from my mate Bec at The Plumbette, “Why You’re Crazy Not to Nominate Yourself for the Kidspot Voices of 2015“. Bec was one of the Kidspot Voices of 2014 Top 30 Personal and Parenting blogs, so she knows what she’s talking about!

No excuses peoples! Have you nominated a blog (yours or someone else’s) yet?!

I have the same thinking as you Janet. You have got to be in it to win it and to ensure you are in it you have to nominate yourself. I have and also passed the blog love around to those I think are awesome. 🙂

I’m one that doesn’t like to nominate myself, besides when it comes to blogging awards, I think not having a niche rules me out. I am however, going to try and make the awards night this year.

I’m not nominating myself but it’s more because I don’t think I fit into the Kidspot mould. I know other non-parents have entered and done well, but…. like Raych, my niche/s (varied as they are) really doesn’t fit!

I’ve nominated myself, as I have in previous years. I’m always flattered to find out that others have nominated me too. I guess nominating myself for me is about believing in myself and my writing. Whereas being nominated by someone else feels like you’ve made enough of an impact on someone that they think other people should know about you too.

Good points you’ve raised there Janet! Something I learnt working my ass off in the corporate world is no one is going to toot your horn for you! You got to do it yourself. People may acknowledge your efforts, but usually you have to be the one to remind people how valuable you are. Same principle I think! Plus if you’re proud of your blog/little online space, why not?

I don’t think I’m really the right demographic anyway so I wouldn’t have nominated myself. A few lovely bloggers have let me know they’ve thrown my hat in the ring, which I am incredibly grateful for. That means a lot.

Your totally right about the businesses nominating themselves in competitions! When you think about it all the big baby product awards they always nominate themselves. I never thought about it like that.

When I was in High School we had to nominate people for school prefect and my home room teacher made me nominate myself! I thought I would be considered up myself if I did. Turned out others thought I was worthy of the title and I was elected.

Thanks for sharing my post Janet. I never thought about businesses nominating themselves for awards. Great analogy there!

This is an excellent question and while I think I will flag this in my plan for next year – I think this baby blog is just too little at the moment. Some of these uber successful and gorgeous looking blogs and websites are great for me to aspire too and get inspiration from. Can’t wait to see the results. Mel xx

I’m all for it. Sometimes people don’t even think to do this for other businesses, so why not do it yourself.

In the past years. I have always nominated myself and other blogs… This year, I haven’t just because I feel so disconnected from the online world with moving and baby and everything else. I secretly hope someone will nominate me. But, I have to admit that these are great reasons. Being nominated is good because you can then access the workshops which are always so useful.
