What Big Eyes You Have!

Janet Camilleri · 29/09/2015 ·

Miss 18 has THE most gorgeous eyes.

my what big EYES you have, Miss 18

They are an unusual shade of green, although the colour changes to reflect what she’s wearing, so sometimes they are more grey, and other times more blue. They’re a lovely almond shape, and she has beautiful long lashes (even without mascara). And, they are ENORMOUS!

Obviously, I’m her mother so I’m slightly biased – of course I think she’s gorgeous (just the same as I think Mr 21 is a very handsome young man).

But it’s not just me that thinks so. All her life, she has had people comment on her “big eyes”.

My, what big EYES you have!

The funny thing is, although it’s meant as a compliment, she didn’t take it that way. When she was little, she used to get quite upset – she thought it meant it was weird or odd to have big eyes, not something to admire. After all, “My, what big EYES you have!” does tend to sound like something that is said to a big bad wolf!

When she confessed to me that she actually didn’t like people remarking about her eyes, I had to explain to her that it was really a compliment!

I still don’t think she’s 100% comfortable receiving such compliments, but at least now she takes them in the spirit in which they are offered 😉 .

But what gets me is the number of people that will say to her – with me standing right beside her – “You have such gorgeous/big/beautiful eyes! Where did you get them from?”.

What a silly question! As if she could have bought them at a shop 😉 . And if I am with her, it makes me feel ugly and like my eyes must look like blackcurrants in a doughy gingerbread face. I mean, if they ask when she is standing right next to her mother, clearly they don’t think she got them from ME! Humph.

So next time you are tempted to say to somebody “My, what big eyes you have!”, remember – they may not necessarily take it as a compliment!

Do you know somebody with gorgeous eyes?!

She does have gorgeous eyes- but I guess it’s something many don’t realise- remarking on other people’s appearances, especially stranger’s- can be considered quite rude, even when complimentary- thanks for the reminder!

She does have beautiful big eyes! My daughter has beautiful big eyes too! She doesn’t get them from me though. She gets them from my mother who also has beautiful big eyes! 🙂

Miss 18 gets them from one of my sisters 🙂

Oh yes… I’d probably say someone had ‘gorgeous’ eyes rather than big eyes. Or expressive eyes.

They do look to be a lovely colour and I see what you mean about the shape.

I once had a short term fling with a guy whose eyelashes were so long he couldn’t wear sunglasses. Lucky bugger (long lashes, not the sunglass thing!).

Boatman struggles with sunnies too Deb, because of the same reason. He is quite picky about the ones he buys because of it.

Deborah & Jess, so unfair, lashes like that are wasted on a guy!

Yes I do. You have gorgeous eyes Janet. They’re twinkly, kind and mischievous. Nothing like currants!

Oh I feel your pain. My daughter gets it all the time too. Hers is mostly to do with the loooooong lashes. From her dad the lucky thing!!

Haha Miss 18 cheats with her lashes and often wears fakes! Long lashes are wasted on boys, don’t you think?!

I think she’s beautiful full stop, not just her eyes.
Two of my girls have colour changing eyes. Boatman does too. So much so that I couldn’t tell you what colour his eyes actually are.

I do too Jess but then I’m biased. My hubster has gorgeous dark brown eyes like a puppy dog!

She does have gorgeous eyes. My sister has colour changing eyes too. Such a cool feature. I’ve been upset about people commenting on the girls too. Look how beautiful they are, where do they get it from? I may as well put a paper bag over my head lol 🙂 #teamIBOT

Her eyes are absolutely gorgeous! It’s funny because coming from an Asian background, saying someone has big eyes is usually a compliment . People used to comment how big my daughters’ eyes were but my husband, being Aussie, used to think it was offensive while I thought it was a compliment!

Wow, I learned something new today Mandy. I’ll give you a tip too: your daughters will be breaking hearts in a few years time with those big eyes!!!
