What to Wear with Denim Shorts

Janet Camilleri · 25/11/2014 ·

There’s a lot of debate going on at the moment about wearing shorts – and if they are a good  look on the middle aged women amongst us.

I have to say, I like shorts – I may have an apple figure, but like to show off my legs 😉 .

The ultra short shorts are best left to the sweet young things (or for wearing at home); but other than that, I don’t think you can go past denim shorts for summer – think of them as the equivalent of jeans in Winter.

I headed over to Polyvore to put together some looks, to show what to wear with denim shorts when you are past the first flush of youth …

Raspberry Ripple

I would totally wear this outfit, with the sleeveless pink shirt worn open like a jacket. Hanging out at home I’d probably just wear the shorts and tank, but throw on the raspberry accessories and you’re good to go run some errands or do the school pick up …

Grape Sorbet

These shorts are probably a little shorter than what I’d like, but you get the idea. Perfect for just chilling at a cafe with friends …

Spearmint Gelato

Now this ensemble would be great for a trip to the movies, as the kimono would keep you covered if the air conditioning is a bit too cool. I just love mint!

Licorice Twist

We all have those times when we want to get in touch with our inner rock chick, and look a bit bad a$$ in black, denim and studs/sequins – and this outfit has all three. I actually own an outfit that is very similar, have had it for years and still love it!

Will you be wearing shorts this Summer – out and about, dagging out at home, or not a chance?!

I love wearing shorts! I just got a really nice pair form Jeans West and I have been enjoying wearing them with nice tops to dress them up.

Love all these outfits! I’m pretty sure I’ve commented on your gorgeous legs a number of times. I would definitely wear shorts if I had your legs.

I used to get called pigeon legs or chicken legs at school, so I’m glad I’ve grown into them 🙂

Yes I am definitely a shorts girl during Summer. They are so practical for this time of year. I love the blue denim look with the simple white tank top – very smart!

I think it’s my favourite too Kathy 😉

I live in shorts in summer. It’s just too hot not to. Mine are a cotton(ish) pair from Target a few years ago – kind of stretchy so they go between mid-thigh and just above the knee, depending on how you sit/stand. I have two in black and one in olive green. Oddly enough, I bought two pairs of the black when I realised how comfy they were. One pair I’ve totally worn out (it’s ripped and now PJs) and the other pair is too small. Only they’re identical.

Hmm, not sure I could pull off the denim short look. Maybe denim cullotts? #TeamIBOT

Never too old for shorts! But I agree about the super tiny ones, they wouldn’t be very comfortable anyway. For me shorts means simplicity and comfort, and I don’t think my legs are half bad for an old girl either!

I love the shirt in the second pic (the grape outfit)! I don’t really wear shorts ‘out’. If exercising I’d wear long things to my knees (but they’re tracksuit pants I’ve cut off). I find shorts ride up and even in bigger sizes (24 or so) I never feel they fit right!

Some nice looks Janet – I’ve never heard of Polyvore before, but it obviously brings out your style. I’m going to boast just a little and say I bought a pair of size 8 shorts last week. Now they are boyfriend (read baggier) style from Target in the Ladies (not the youngish) section. I know they most certainly equate to a real size 10, but I’m pretty happy I fit them. With a bit of fake tan, my pins are taking me places.

Kathy be warned – Polyvore is addictive!!! And well done you 🙂

I love all the outfits you put together above Janet, especially the Grape Sorbet look, if only those shorts were a tad longer!

I actually just bought a pair of knee-length shorts after swearing off shorts ever since I was a little kid. I really like that first shorts outfit, especially1

I wear denim shorts because it feels like a mummy practicality! Until I had a child I thought I was too cool for longer denim shorts, but no. It’s a must haha. Like you’ve shown, there are lots of ways to still look stylish 🙂

Absolutely Kez, they’re are so practical when you have little ones. I used to live in them 🙂

I recently went shopping for a new pair of denim shorts and it took me forever to find a pair that didn’t leave my butt hanging out the bottom or didn’t make me look like a nanna. Finally found a pair I was happy enough with. Can’t beat a pair of shorts, they are so versatile, especially when you are constantly bending over for kids and at the park where one small breeze can expose your frilly knickers to everyone.

It’s hard to find the perfect pair (a bit like jeans) but once you do they’re pure gold!

I bought some shorts, I now have two pair within a matter of weeks and it has been years and years since I dared to wear shorts. Now I just need to pluck up some courage and be seen in public wearing said shorts. x

All I ever wear is shorts in summer, skirts aren’t my thing and dresses NUP! Go the apples – we can still rock shorts – actually I reckon everyone can!

    • Janet Camilleri says

      26/11/2014 at 7:21 pm

Funnily enough I didn’t wear them at all last Summer, so I’m enjoying wearing them this year!

You’ve put some really nice selections together there, Janet. My fave would have to be the Spearmint Gelato. I’ve always been a huge fan of shorts. They’re especially great when you need to get down on the floor with the kids.

I love how a lot of bloggers are bandying together to try to get us who are reluctant to wear shorts inspired to try them.

I seriously cannot remember the last time I wore a pair. It would have to be when I was about 12 (and that was many, many years ago!).

I don’t have lovely legs like you Janet so it is going to be a real struggle to see if I can find some but I am going to give it a red hot go as my hubby always says I should have a pair for when we go for a walk on the beach.

I will let you know if I find any that work 🙂
