What to Wear with Tan Knee High Boots

Janet Camilleri · 14/06/2017 ·

I’ve been mourning the loss of my old faithful black knee high boots, and desperately searching for a pair to replace them.

However I just couldn’t find any that I liked – until I stumbled across these beauties at Spendless Shoes.

Trouble is,  they don’t come in black.

They’re tan – which presented me with a bit of a dilemma:

Could I, should I, make them work?
Or in my wardrobe would they lurk?
Could they be as versatile?
Or would I find they weren’t my style?

(With apologies to Dr Seuss!)

I loved them regardless, so decided I would give them a go!

Now I must confess, it HAS taken me a little while to work out what to wear with my new boots.

My black boots on the other hand, were a no-brainer, after being a standard part of my winter wardrobe for ten years or more. I didn’t have to THINK about how to wear them – I just knew. And, I especially loved them with black pants as they made my legs look longer!

Whereas the tan boots had me stumped at first …

Style Hints for Tan  Boots

The first piece of advice if you too have been wondering what to wear with tan boots, is to spend an hour or so playing with them. Try them with different pants, skirts, and outfits – and take some pics on your phone to remind you of the outfits that work best.

Seeing as how I’ve already done some of the hard work for you, here are some of the tan boot combos I put together from my own wardrobe:

Tan Boots, Summer Dress and Denim Jacket

This combo is great for when the seasons are changing and you don’t quite know what to wear.

Tan Boots with a Little Black Dress

I’m a big fan of a little black dress for more casual wear, and not just for evenings. And, it makes a great base layer for an outfit featuring tan knee high boots and a jacket, whether denim, or a kimono style one.

Tan Boots and Black Leggings

Although I would normally have reached for my black boots to wear with black leggings, I love the visual interest that tan boots provide instead.

Inspiration from Instagram

My other hot tip is to turn to Instagram for some inspiration, by searching the hashtag #tanboots.

uncomplicat wearing tan boots

I love how Catrin from Uncomplicat, has combined neutral layers and accessories with a bright dress for a base layer. And if you check out her Instagram feed, you’ll see she too loves her tan boots!

debraasinzebra

Meanwhile, Debra from @debraasinzebra looks toasty warm and stylish in her jeans, jumper and boots – and I’m really loving that coat too!

bron from realmumstyle

Bron from @realmumstyle believes that pregnancy is a great opportunity to try out styles that are very different to your norm! She doesn’t normally “do” boho and yet look how great she looks 🙂 .

lily_and_dot tan boots

Whether it’s leggings and a tunic, or a soft skirt, any excuse to wear tan boots – just like @lily_and_dot and friends!

deep fried fruit

While Leanne from @deepfriedfruit wear boots in dark brown and tan, echoing the colours throughout her stylish outfit.

And last but by no means least, the gorgeous @yolandi9638 from South Africa shows us how well tan boots work with black!

I hope that I have expanded your worldview somewhat with this post, and that next time you are in the market for a pair of boots, feel brave enough to give tan a try!

Do you have a pair of knee high boots? What colour?!

I bought a pair of Diana Ferrari Supersoft black knee high boots and they are the most comfortable thing I ever put on my feet but they are Up Money, as my Uncle would say, even though I got them at the outlets in Canberra.. I am thinking about going back for a pair in a different colour, I love them so much. They have an outlet at Brisbane Airport, I think?

Rivers had a pair of suedey pull on ones for $30 which I intend to check out, though I have not been impressed with their shoes much lately. 🙂

Those outfits are all perfect and I think tan books look great with denim. Better than black usually, unless you’ve offset the black with a black top or bag.

I love the look on you and others but I haven’t been able to get my head around it for myself. I guess we all have our blind spots x

I felt the same Jan, some times it’s good to step outside our comfort zone and try something new, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much I’m liking them!

I’ve just bought a little pair of black ankle boots – loving them with my jeans and I think I’ll try them with black tights and a dress soon. I’ve never worn tan boots, but they certainly work if you get the outfit right.
