Whatever Happened to: Teen Beat and Tiger Beat magazines?!

Janet Camilleri · 08/09/2014 ·

Tiger Beat magazine circa 1980If you were a teen or pre-teen in the late 70’s / early 80’s, then chances are the faces on the right need no introduction – so many memories from the days when I read Teen Beat and Tiger Beat magazines!

Believe it or not I think Tiger Beat – which has been around since 1965 – is still going strong. Though I’m sure the celebrities are very different πŸ˜‰ . Seems pre-teenage girls still like to annoy their parents by sticking posters all over the walls!

Back in the day, it was all about theΒ  TV stars: Shaun Cassidy (The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries), Leif Garrett (Three for the Road), Scott Baio (Happy Days), Jimmy McNichol (who?!), Greg Evigan (BJ and the Bear), Willie Aames (Eight is Enough), and Erik Estrada (CHiPs). Such spunks!

My teen idol
Can you see the resemblance to Scott Baio?!

I Must Confess: I was totally crushing on Scott Baio – better known as Chachi from Happy Days.

Looking back on it now, I was definitely attracted to a certain “type” … just look at the man I married.

Dark hair and olive skin? Check.

Gorgeous puppy dog eyes? Check.

Italian descent? Check … See what I mean? πŸ˜‰

So now it’s your turn to confess all: who was your teen idol? And do you remember Teen Beat or Tiger Beat?!

Linking up with My Home Truths for some celebrity confessions today!

LOL before I even read your post I saw that pic of Scott Baio and was all like “Reeeeeow….. Chachi!”

Can’t say I recall either of those mags. I’m 44 this year, so possibly I was still a bit young and niave and bubble wrapped at that stage. I also don’t remember having any real idols. Weird.

I’m the dag who knows who Jimmy McNichol is because he and his sister Kristy McNichol guest starred in a Carpenters Christmas Special in the 70’s. And I’m sure you’ll sleep better tonight due to that useless bit of trivia. You’re welcome. I don’t remember reading Tiger Beat magazine but I did read Smash Hits from time to time! I crushed on Jonathan Crombie (who played Gilbert in that Anne Of Green Gables mini-series) as a teen.

I don’t remember either of those, but I remember TV Hits, Dolly and Girlfriend. I know the latter two are still around but I’m not sure about TV Hits.

I wasn’t a huge reader of teen magazines but I would walk over hot coals for a decorating magazine x

I had a massive boner for Erik Estrada when I was (very) young. Totally. Yeah. Kx

I wasn’t really into teen magazines either, but I was an avid reader. My teen crush was George Harrison from The Beatles. I thought he was the ‘Bees Knees’!

The Beatles were a bit before my time, but Paul would have got my vote x

Ha ha that is classic! And never heard of Tiger, maybe they didn’t have it in NZ – and yes I can see the resemblance! I loved 21 Jump Street, JOHNNY DEPP! My type x

Oh yes, 21 Jump St and Johnny Depp for sure … though that was a few years down the track for me!
