The husbear and I have recently returned from a trip to visit relatives up in north Queensland (did ya miss me?!).
We mostly stayed in a rural area in an old farm house, and got to enjoy a real farm getaway.
That’s not to say that I was looking forward to it at first!
I’m a city girl born and bred so was initially quite nervous about this new adventure … the isolation, the snakes, the flies!
But I was assured that although it was a rural property, there was still indoor plumbing, a comfy bed and internet reception. Besides, with my gum boots on, I felt INVINCIBLE as I trekked through the mud and cow poop!

Here are the main reasons why I loved our farm getaway, and would not hesitate to recommend it to others.
- With no curtains on the windows (we were miles from anybody else, so they weren’t needed for privacy), it was easy to wake up early each morning as the sun streamed in.
- At night, we could lie in our bed and gaze at the stars. So romantic!
- We could see what the weather was doing without having to go outside, turn on the TV or check on our phones.
- Instead of watching TV, we spent hours just watching the cows!
- While on our farm getaway, it felt like we owned the day – instead of the day owning us.
We picked bags of cumquats which we fed to the cows for an aunt, so she could make jam 🙂 .

The husbear had a real knack with the cows. I shouldn’t be surprised – he grew up on a farm near Mackay, and all sorts of animals just seem to adore him. I think I’m going to have to start calling him the animal whisperer, or Dr Dolittle
.
As we watched the cows early one morning, we noticed a dingo hanging around. Eventually the herd wandered off, except for one lonely cow. The husbear was so concerned he drove the 4WD up into the paddock – only to discover that the cow was protecting her newborn calf! Of course once my husbear drove up, the dingo disappeared into the bush – and the calf shakily stood up, before mama and baby slowly ambled over to join the herd.

It was a fantastic break and although I’ve always been more of a seaside/beach break girl in the past, now I’ll definitely recommend the joys of a real farm getaway. I wonder what it would be like to make a permanent “tree change” to a rural area?
Which do you prefer for a mini break or getaway – city, mountains, seaside or farm?

My vote will depend on the season,, but my preference is city and seaside. Looks like you had fun!
Sounds absolutely perfect. I love that you felt like you owned the day rather than it owning you. Having no curtains and looking out to the stars sounds tres romantic!! I am more of a seaside girl and like my creature comforts, but after a recent trip to NZ I have to say I find the mountains equally as appealing now. Glad you had a great break.
Yes, I think the whole thought of us owning the day (rather than the day owning us) is perhaps the thought/memory that is the strongest.
We’re going on a farm getaway to my sister-in-law’s in a couple of weeks. A breath of fresh air and some space. Looking forward to it!
Perfect! Enjoy the break!
I just want a break. Our last whirlwind trip to NSW was far too quick and there were far too many people to catch up with not to mention the house renovations that I really needed a holiday to recover. Find me a resort where I can just turn up and everything is done for me, on a budget and I’m there.
Sounds like you need to go on a cruise! 😉
I agree but hubby who goes to sea with work far too often and suffers seasickness has other ideas.
Course I missed yah! We have all this at my parents and I love it – as do the kids. Oh but we have curtains!!!!!
Ohhhh you’re lucky! Hope it’s closer than our rellies – which is a 10 hour drive!
I would give all the getaways a go! Good fun to do something different for a few days. 🙂
I’d pick the seaside, I’ve never really done the farm getaway but yours sounds like you had a great time. Apparently using sunlight to wake you up stimulates serotonin release and helps you wake up naturally, so go no curtains! I also like your review of the air fryer – I’ve always wondered about them and wondered if they were worth it.
Having moved from the city to the country, I will defineltely agree with you and recommend a farm stay to everyone. It really is so peaceful, calming and carefree. My fav now is a getaway to the seaside, down at our house on the Great Ocean Rd in Victoria. Bring on summer and sand.
I definitely want to do a farm stay when our girls are older. I think they’d really enjoy the open space and feeding animals.
I would love to take the kids on a farm stay. They are obsessed with animals and would love to get up close and personal with cows and sheep!
Wow! I would never think to take a ‘farm getaway’. Mainly because it’s a little too close to home, with the sounds and sights of cows and other livestock audible from most parts of my town and home. I tottaly understand the need to getaway. There is something quiet liberating about NOT checking your phone.
My dad lives in the Lockyer Valley not far from Toowoomba and we love going out there to visit … it’s so peaceful and calm and I find we all relax as soon as we get there!
We have rellies near Toowoomba too so I know exactly what you mean 🙂
I would love, love, love a farm getaway! We live 5 minutes from the beach, and while I do enjoy the beach-side atmosphere and lifestyle, there’s something….je ne sais pas….about the country. It’s so peaceful, in a way the beach isn’t. Looks fantastic! x Aroha
It was Aroha, and we were blessed to have a farmhouse all to ourselves for free! We have awesome rellies!
