Hubster and I have recently returned from a trip to visit relatives up north (did ya miss me?!); we mostly stayed in an old farm house, and got to enjoy a real farm getaway.
That’s not to say that I was looking forward to it at first!
I’m a city girl born and bred so was initially quite nervous about this new adventure … the isolation, the snakes, the flies!
But I was assured that there was indoor plumbing, a comfy bed and internet reception. Besides, with my gum boots on, I felt invincible as I trekked through the mud and cow poop!
Here are the main reasons why I loved our farm getaway, and would not hesitate to recommend it to others.
- With no curtains on the windows (we were miles from anybody else, so they weren’t needed for privacy), it was easy to wake up early each morning as the sun streamed in.
- At night, we could lie in our bed and gaze at the stars. So romantic!
- We could see what the weather was doing without having to go outside, turn on the TV or check on our phones.
- Instead of watching TV, we spent hours just watching the cows!
- While on our farm getaway, it felt like we owned the day – instead of the day owning us.
We picked bags of cumquats which we fed to the cows for an aunt, so she could make jam.
Hubster had a real knack with the cows. I think I’m going to have to start calling him the animal whisperer, or Dr Dolittle (I’ll be sharing more about his Dr Dolittle adventures on the blog tomorrow
As we watched the cows early one morning, we noticed a dingo hanging around. Eventually the herd wandered off, except for one lonely cow. Hubster was concerned and took the 4WD up into the paddock – only to discover that the cow was protecting her newborn calf! Of course once hubster drove up, the dingo disappeared into the bush – and the calf shakily stood up, before mama and baby slowly ambled over to join the herd.
It was a fantastic break and although I’ve always been more of a seaside/beach break girl in the past, now I’ll definitely recommend the joys of a real farm getaway!
Which do you prefer for a mini break or getaway – city, mountains, seaside or farm?
