Are Spray Tans Still In?

Janet Camilleri · 28/11/2014 ·

Today I have a very important question for you: Are spray tans still in?!

On a recent girls’ day out, one of my friends noticed that a lot of the gorgeous young things were sporting the orange glow that can only mean one thing: a spray tan!

I was quite surprised, because I thought that spray tans had become a bit passé. There are many other types of tanning that could have taken the throne!

I’ve had a spray tan or two in my time. The hubster shouted me one to celebrate my 40th birthday; and I also had one before going on a beach holiday, so I could rock that bikini with confidence (needless to say, both of these occasions were several years ago now!).

A spray tan for my 40th birthday – it’s pretty pale, looking at it now! And how little are my kids in this photo?!

The Oompa-Loompa look is not for me, so both times I chose “lightly glowing” rather than “irridescent orange”. And I did enjoy the lovely, healthy look (yes, I know, it’s bad that we equate tans with health, but we really do!) it gave to my complexion. It also helps to even out your skin tone and hide the white strap marks 😉 .

What I didn’t love however, was the feel of the spray tan on my skin. It’s kind of sticky, and I could almost feel my pores were screaming out for air!

Plus, to make the tan last longer, you’re supposed to use a special cleanser instead of soap, and I just never felt CLEAN the whole week or so it lasted.

I like the way the spray tan evens out the skin tone on my decolletage area 🙂 .

Are Spray Tans Still In for Formals?

Not all that long ago, spray tans were an essential part of preparation for any formal or wedding (especially if you were in the bridal party).

But it doesn’t seem to be quite as popular these days. Mind you, I am probably basing my opinion on the fact that Miss 18 didn’t get a spray tan before her formal last year. She has lovely porcelain skin and thankfully decided to embrace it, rather than get a golden glow (check out some of her formal photos, here).

Maybe spray tans have just slipped off my radar, but they are in fact, still in! What do you think?!

Hi Janet, Wouldn’t have a clue about spray tans, I’ve never had one. But, aside from that, I had another look at gorgeous Julia’s formal photos – she looked so lovely, and the dress was beautiful x

Can’t believe it was a year ago now!

I’ve never had one, nor do I want one. To me they look too fake. I thought all-over bronzer was in. I saw a high school student on her way to school last week and she was applying bronzer with a VERY heavy hand all ove her arms. It was already very thick on her face. The look was unnatural. Most definitely oompa-loompa-ish!

I don’t mind a light dusting of bronzer but you’ve got to be so careful, it’s easy to overdo it! That and the fake tan I think!

I’ve been using Le Tan Gradual Glow cream for over a week now. Let’s just say it gives new meaning to the word “gradual”.

LOL okay won’t be using it anytime soon … Miss 18 and I used to use Model Co tanning mousse, that wasn’t bad

I think spray tans have evolved and are looking far more natural these days. I’m not a fan of the orange look but if I have to show my skin for a special occasion, I’m much more confident if I’ve had a light spray tan.

I’ve used Model Co mousse a few times, and quite like that

Good for your daughter – being happy how she is naturally – wonderful 🙂
Yes, spray tans are still in, although I like to think the orange look isn’t as cool anymore – phew!
I am naturally blessed with olive skin so I’ve always passed on the spray tan. I’m just glad that they are much healthier than solarium tans or overexposure to the sun. We lost my brother in law to melanoma in 2010 so I’m passionate about us not trying the burn-before-tanning technique so many people sadly embrace.

So sorry to hear about your brother in law. The hubster has lovely olive skin (he’s of mediterranean descent) but had a skin cancer removed earlier this year. It was a wakeup call to both of us – so if I’m gonna tan, I’ll fake tan!

I had a spray tan once and by the time I arrived home it had settled in the fat creases on my stomach. Not a good look. I never bothered again.

Are you sure it wasn’t showing off your abs? 😉

I’ve never try spray tan, but if there’s other way round that sprays and makes me go paler, I’d probably go for that!

Mmm I’m not a fan of the spray tan. However my daughter, who is very fair skinned, does her own with a spray tan can fairly often. Some of them are rather natural looking but then those orange ones are disgusting! I say the porcelain skin looks fine.

I’ve never had one, but yours look very natural! It’s on my to-do list, but I think whoever draws the short straw and has to spray tan me will probably need some fairly intensive counselling afterwards!!

Hi, being in the hair and beauty industry I used to spray tan every 3 weeks. Now however I prefer the natural tan look and can’t be bothered with upkeep a spray tan required.

Ah the maintenance is a killer … that’s why I don’t bother with gel nails anymore!
