It seems nearly every young celebrity has been inked, but I couldn’t help wondering if there were many famous middle aged women with tattoos.
Of course, the poster girl for middle aged women with tattoos is none other than Angelina Jolie … although not visible in the photo below, she has a number of tattoos, including six with the coordinates of the birthplace of each of her children.
Celebrities in their 30’s …
Reese Witherspoon¹ is said to have a tattoo on her stomach; while Drew Barrymore² has six across her stomach, legs, back and hips – although the same story reported that Drew is in the process of having them removed.
In their 40’s …
It seems middle aged women in their 40’s are a sentimental bunch: Jennifer Aniston¹ has a tattoo on her foot, “Norman”, the name of her childhood pet corgi; while Julia Roberts³ has been inked with her children’s names and husband’s initials. Victoria Beckham’s tattoos are tributes to her husband and her children (4). Gwyneth Paltrow has been photographed with a small “C” on her hip (5) – perhaps in honour of her former husband, Chris Martin – which begs the question – has she had it removed now they’ve “consciously uncoupled”?!
50’s …
Melanie Griffith famously had Antonio Banderas’ name in a heart on her arm … apparently Meg Ryan was inked relatively recently¹. Midlife crisis perhaps?
And beyond
Surprisingly, the tattoos don’t stop there!
Dame Helen Mirren has a small tattoo on her hand – I thought it was a bird, but turns out it’s an interlocking V – a symbol of tolerance (6).
She’s joined by Felicity Kendall (7) – best known as Barbara from The Good Life – and Susan Sarandon (8).
However, despite the fact that there are plenty of famous middle aged women with tattoos – apart from maybe enhancing my eyebrows – I’m not inclined to turn my body into a canvas anytime soon. Each to their own I guess!
The photos were taken at Madame Tussaud’s in London … stay tuned, tomorrow I will be sharing more photos from our visit to the famous wax work museum!

I have several tattoos and will be getting more but yes, it’s a very personal choice!
Although I don’t want any, clearly I’m fascinated with the subject!!!
I’m in the no inking group. The way I look at it is that I would not be seen dead in hair dos or cloths and makeup I have worn over the years so I assume I will not like it in the future. Good thing we can do our own thing.
Good thinking Fran – I agree 🙂 .
How amazing are those wax works!
I have one tattoo on my wrist and hope to add to it soon but other than that I have nothing else. I like tattoos with a story and meaning. I am of the thought that what else are you going to do with your skin once you are gone?
Mr 21 has one, and Miss 18 has 3 (shh don’t tell her father)! She has one on each wrist (which he hasn’t noticed even though it’s been months) and one on her ribs.
I had no idea that Julia Roberts had tattoos or Helen Mirran either for that matter! I’m afraid I must be an old fuddy duddy because I don’t like tattoos at all and never will. I will zip my lips at that and say no more because I know that SO many people these days think that tattoos are cool. I’m afraid I’m not one of them! 😉
I’m the same Min x
I’m not one for tattoos either, although I don’t mind them on other people. I couldn’t stand the pain!
Yep, I’m a wuss too 🙂
I don’t care what anyone does. My daughter has a small tattoo on her hip where no one can see it. She kept it hidden for ages before we spotted it. One of my sons had the Virgin Mary tattooed on his inner arm. I didn’t realise he was that religious until he had it done! It seemed a strange choice really. One of my other sons has “Don’t worry, be happy” on his wrist. At least they went for positive things I guess.
Mr 21 has one on his wrist; Miss 18 has three – one on each wrist, of a cross, and the Hebrew word for “forgiven” – like you I didn’t realise she felt that strongly about it either! She also has a small sun on her ribs.
It seems self expression has no age limit. What a wonderful world we live in.
Malinda, you are my kind of woman!
Although it’s not for me, clearly I find it fascinating!
I have a small one on the nape of my neck. I probabaly would get another if I was inspired, but Boatman isn’t a fan of them.
What is it of Jess?
Each to their own, I don’t have any but I do like hearing the stories about why people have had them done.
I’m with you Vicki 🙂
My siblings and sister-in-law have tattoos, plus friends do, but I’m not brave enough to get any. It’s not for the pain factor but more so that I would not know what tattoo to get or where to put it! I’d most likely get it done and then want to change it!
It’s not for me but each to their own. My kids have small ones … the hubster wouldn’t talk to Mr 21 for a week when he had his done!
I’m surprised to hear about Reese Witherspoon. I thought she’d be too clean cut. I’m a bit clean cut myself. No ink for me.
Me too Renee. Plus the pain … no way!
I had my first when I was 50 on my lower back. I’ve since added a couple more. Both my husband and I love them. I wanted a tattoo when I was on my teens but I’m so glad I waited!
I would like an upper thigh tattoo then that is it. Perhaps a 60th birthday present.
