Filling in the Gaps

Janet Camilleri · 15/10/2014 ·

When we first moved into our home 5 years ago, there were two cut-outs in the wall between the formal lounge (now media room) and dining room.

Me and my kids January 2011 in front of the gaps

Although they made an interesting feature, the reality was they just weren’t practical. Noise from the kitchen and dining would bother people in the media room trying to watch TV or a movie, and vice versa. So the hubster (who is very handy – did you see the reno he did to our walk in wardrobe recently?) filled them in.

Gaps filled in

We knew it would be almost impossible to match the wall paint so we decide to make a feature out of the slightly recessed niches that were created, by painting them in a different colour.

It looked great – but bare – for a very long time, mainly because we didn’t know what to put in the gaps!

On our last trip to Ikea I picked up 6 photo frames and decided they would do nicely. Except – what photos or prints to put inside them?

I got creative on my computer and found a series of monochrome seashells in clipart, which I then re-coloured aqua, before printing and framing them.

Voila! I’m quite pleased with the end result!

Looks great Janet. Why do designers put things like that in, it is clearly not practical!!

I’m so impressed that you changed the clipart and printed them out yourself Janet. I’m too lazy for that lol and probably would’ve just picked up some of those card pack things from IKEA to go in the frames.

I must confess … the empty frames sat on the walls for months before I got around to doing something with them. We had rellies coming to stay and that motivated me to fix them!

Such a great idea, we also have cut outs, which were a good idea, BEFORE WE HAD KIDS! Ours are a lot bigger, eg 1m by nearly 1.5m so not sure if would look as good as this when filled! Go the hubster x

WOW, what a difference the photo frames from Ikea made to the bare walls! Very clever idea 😉
