In an ideal world, we could enjoy fashion without the guilt: all clothing would be ethically made and environmentally friendly.
Of course, guilt free fashion is the exception rather than the rule, which is why it is always refreshing to come across brands passionate about more than just the almighty dollar.
Fashion that Cares
I’m talking about brands that embrace fairtrade fashion principles, and care about people – the people who make their clothes, right through to the people who wear them.
The Apparel Effect is a family-run business based out of Perth, bringing a range of eco fashion to Australian shoppers.
To introduce me to the store and its offerings, I was gifted two dresses for the purpose of review.
Both are in shades of blue, which is one of the hottest coolest colours for this Autumn/Winter.
Being an apple-shaped figure, I prefer to wear this particular dress as a tunic over leggings, tying the waist so that it creates an empire line (as seen in the pic above) which is much more flattering. However if you are slender or a pear shape, it would look lovely as a dress (I gave it a try in the pic below, but I don’t think it’s really working for me).
When you shop for fashion at The Apparel Effect online store, you can choose from items that:
- were not made in appalling sweatshop conditions;
- rather, the worker has been fairly compensated;
- feature natural fabrics that are comfortable and breathable;
- have been made using non-toxic dyes.
The timeless styling and quality workmanship in every garment means that these are clothes designed to last.
I love this soft cotton and bamboo dress – wearing natural fibres is becoming a priority for my stage of life, as even in the middle of winter I can overheat easily. Wearing clothes that breathe helps me to stay cool and confident, even when my internal thermostat is misbehaving!
As you would expect from a store with such ideals, The Apparel Effect stocks fashion for real women, with real world sizing – check out the range of dresses (and there’s even glamourous, plus-sized lingerie too!).
Fashion trends may come and go, but by supporting brands like The Apparel Effect, we can help ensure that ethical clothing practices are here to stay.
