It’s no secret that Miss 19 is a makeup addict, and is forever receiving packages in the mail, of lipsticks and other cosmetics.
So as soon as I heard about the how to make lipstick classes held by Create Your Cosmetics at the recent Bloggers United event, I signed us both up. I knew she’d love it – and at the end of the night we would have our very own, custom-made and personalised, unique lipstick!
What’s In Your Lipstick?
I’d never really given much thought before to what my lipstick might be made of. Or that my lipstick could make me sick.
Unless you make it yourself, you really *can’t* be too sure what ingredients are in your lipstick. A quick search of the internet will reveal that even to this day, many lipsticks contain traces of lead, and other bizarre ingredients – such as crushed beetles, and cow’s brains!
It’s (almost) enough to put you off lipstick for life!
How to Make Lipstick
With an intimate group of six, there was plenty of opportunity for us to ask questions, chat and have a bit of fun as we went about making our own lipstick.
In every class there is a problem child, and I Must Confess: it seems I had the honour in this group. I can be a bit clumsy, so I was fortunate to have Miss 19 there to help me measure out my ingredients!
What ever did I do without her π ?!
All was going well – I’d mixed up a nice subtle nude shade, but was keen to give it a bit more colour which meant adding a teensy bit of black oxide powder …
Which is where things went dreadfully wrong. Told ya I was clumsy – I accidentally tipped in far too much and ended up with a disgusting dark grey/mauvey mess. (Which would have been a great lipstick shade if I was a goth, but I’m not). I haven’t got a photo of it because I panicked and was too busy trying to recover from my mistake! Ooops.
I was also the messiest by far. Compare my neighbour’s workspace at the end of the night (below) with mine (the pic beneath) π .
Well, they do say that messy people tend to be more intelligent and creative!
Fortunately I was able to salvage my lipstick mixture, and ended up with a gorgeous pinky nude (right below). Miss 19’s taste in lipstick is much more daring, so she went for a deep plum purple (on the left).
Then it was into the microwave to melt the waxes, before giving our potions a good stir to combine the lipstick ingredients.
After pouring our lipsticks into a silicon mould, we placed them in the fridge for 10 minutes to set.
At last it was time for the great unveiling, and inserting our customised lipstick into the tube, which was very exciting. It looked like a real lipstick!
I coudn’t wait to try my new lipstick out …
Here we are, modelling our new lipstick shades. Just beautiful! We both agree, our lipsticks feel lovely on the lips, and last really well too.
And now I can tell you *exactly* what’s in my lipstick:
bees wax – candelilla wax – shea butter – jojoba oil – castor oil –
mica – titanium oxide – strawberry fragrance oil
It was a lovely way to spend an evening with my girl – apparently many workplaces nowadays book a lipstick making class, for a fun team building activity! Wish we’d done that instead of stupid high ropes, back when I was an employee …
What was the last team building activity you were forced to do?!

That sounds fun – but no you have me worried about lipstick!! Yikes!
Janet Camilleri says
Yes, I had no idea, I couldn’t believe that so many brands still have traces of lead in their lippy π
Leanne @ Deep Fried Fruit says
Make your own lipstick? Sooooo much fun!
Janet Camilleri says
I know right!
Kirsty @ My Home Truths says
That sounds really cool – well done too on salvaging your lipstick. I would have been the problem child too!!!!
Janet Camilleri says
I was panicking there for a while, believe me!
Raych says
I’m impressed. Might need to find something like this in Perth for the school holidays with my three girls.
Janet Camilleri says
It was great fun. I’d definitely do it again.

It’s horrible when you think about how much lipstick we ‘eat’ over our lifetime. It makes me feel queasy. Isn’t it lovely having a daughter to do these things with? Mine’s coming to visit me soon and I’m very excited. I must say, your daughter grows more beautiful by the day. She has exquisite colouring.
Janet Camilleri says
You’re so right Pinky … especially as I missed out on doing “mother daughter” stuff with my own mum. And thank you for the lovely compliment about my girl x
Jenni says
Mine was the messiest work station as well haha. Your lippy turned out great!!
Janet Camilleri says
Can’t wait to see how yours turned out – are you going to blog about it?
Sammy says

You’ll love it Sammy. Stafford was quite a drive for us (and you too) but definitely worth it π . Besides, if you get a group together, Lana might come to you!
Beth | AlmostPosh.com says
This sounds like a great activity, I’d love to have a go!
Janet Camilleri says
At the moment it’s only in Brisbane I think. But might be worth asking!
Shell says
I LOVE the sound of this! I’m really big on natural beauty products (including lipstick), so making my own using natural ingredients sounds like fun. Hopefully the company will extend their wings Australia wide so I can rope my Mum in to do it with me. :o) (P.S. Miss 19 is gorgeous! I’m envious of her winged liner & eyelashes.)
Janet Camilleri says
Shell I’m sure the owner of Create Your Cosmetics would like that too! And thank you for the compliment for Miss 19. She is a bit of a makeup addict … she has posted a few videos on Youtube, you can find her (including a winged eyeliner video) here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEoIfe2336apbGAqmWPsCSQ
Di from Max The Unicorn says
OMG how much fun this would be! What a great mother-daughter bonding experience too. At least your lipstick didn’t turn out goth after all, lol!
Janet Camilleri says
Amazingly, it turned out just the right shade!
Ingrid @ Fabulous and Fun Life says
Lead, crushed beetles and cow’s brains!!!!! Surely not??!!!
What a great workshop! I wish my employer would organise such a workshop but being in a very male dominated workplace this is never going to happen there!
Thanks for linking up this week Janet! This was a fascinating read!
Janet Camilleri says
LOL your workplace should do it, and then all the guys would have a lipstick to give their significant others π
Mel says
This is so so so cool! I’ll have to try it. The only other place I’ve heard of is the Lip Lab in Sydney. Love both your shades.
Janet Camilleri says
Thanks for the heads up about Lip Lab! Good to know π
