How to Make Lipstick

It’s no secret that Miss 19 is a makeup addict, and is forever receiving packages in the mail, of lipsticks and other cosmetics.

So as soon as I heard about the how to make lipstick classes held by Create Your Cosmetics at the recent Bloggers United event, I signed us both up. I knew she’d love it – and at the end of the night we would have our very own, custom-made and personalised, unique lipstick!

What’s In Your Lipstick?

I’d never really given much thought before to what my lipstick might be made of. Or that my lipstick could make me sick.

Unless you make it yourself, you really *can’t* be too sure what ingredients are in your lipstick. A quick search of the internet will reveal that even to this day, many lipsticks contain traces of lead, and other bizarre ingredients – such as crushed beetles, and cow’s brains!

It’s (almost) enough to put you off lipstick for life!

How to Make Lipstick

With an intimate group of six, there was plenty of opportunity for us to ask questions, chat and have a bit of fun as we went about making our own lipstick.

In every class there is a problem child, and I Must Confess: it seems I had the honour in this group. I can be a bit clumsy, so I was fortunate to have Miss 19 there to help me measure out my ingredients!

What ever did I do without her 😉 ?!

All was going well – I’d mixed up a nice subtle nude shade, but was keen to give it a bit more colour which meant adding a teensy bit of black oxide powder …

Which is where things went dreadfully wrong. Told ya I was clumsy – I accidentally tipped in far too much and ended up with a disgusting dark grey/mauvey mess. (Which would have been a great lipstick shade if I was a goth, but I’m not). I haven’t got a photo of it because I panicked and was too busy trying to recover from my mistake! Ooops.

I was also the messiest by far. Compare my neighbour’s workspace at the end of the night (below) with mine (the pic beneath) 😉 .

Well, they do say that messy people tend to be more intelligent and creative!

Fortunately I was able to salvage my lipstick mixture, and ended up with a gorgeous pinky nude (right below). Miss 19’s taste in lipstick is much more daring, so she went for a deep plum purple (on the left).

Then it was into the microwave to melt the waxes, before giving our potions a good stir to combine the lipstick ingredients.

After pouring our lipsticks into a silicon mould, we placed them in the fridge for 10 minutes to set.

At last it was time for the great unveiling, and inserting our customised lipstick into the tube, which was very exciting. It looked like a real lipstick!

I coudn’t wait to try my new lipstick out …

Here we are, modelling our new lipstick shades. Just beautiful! We both agree, our lipsticks feel lovely on the lips, and last really well too.

And now I can tell you *exactly* what’s in my lipstick:

bees wax – candelilla wax – shea butter – jojoba oil – castor oil –
mica – titanium oxide – strawberry fragrance oil

It was a lovely way to spend an evening with my girl – apparently many workplaces nowadays book a lipstick making class, for a fun team building activity! Wish we’d done that instead of stupid high ropes, back when I was an employee …

What was the last team building activity you were forced to do?!
