What it’s like to Look Young for your Age

Janet Camilleri · 16/02/2015 ·

My two sisters will probably kill me for saying this, but I’ve always looked young for my age – and younger than them – even though I am the oldest!

As a teenager, it seemed like everybody else was going to pubs and clubs long before they were legal. I Must Confess: I had no chance – I looked way too young!

Just before my 24th birthday, I started a new job. The woman training me stopped suddenly and grabbed my hand. “OMG you’re married!” she exclaimed. “Didn’t you just finish school?” … Um, NO. Humph.

It isn’t always a good thing to look young for your age!

Was I a Teen Mum?!

Guess how old I am in this picture, where I am bathing our firstborn:

I’m 28 – though I’ve had many folk tell me I look about 17 in this pic!

I tend to take it for granted that I look young for my age these days. It was only when I went to a high school reunion, and noticed how the men were bald, fat, grey and old looking – much older than me – that I realised how lucky I am! (And it’s probably just as well I married a younger man too, LOL.)

These days, if people see me with my kids, they estimate my age pretty accurately. Something about (grown) kids makes you instantly look old!

But otherwise, yes, for years folk have generally guessed my age as about 5 years younger than what it really is. And after years of complaining, I’m finally relishing that fact 😉 .

What about you – did you look young for your age?

Yeah… At 41 I shock people when I tell them my age. I get comments like “wow! I thought you were my age!” From people in their late 20s to early 30s. I once posted a picture on a forum for someone who believed that women who thought they looked younger were just delusional. In another thread one of the posters commented that he’d thought I was much older… In the picture I was 37 and he thought I looked 17. I’ve even been mistaken for a kid when I was with my daughter! It helps I’m very short… But I do wonder what people think when they see me with my 3 teens! No, I wasn’t a mum at 12!!

I live in Brisbane, Australia, and I'm learning how to fashion a new life now that we have an empty nest - did somebody say "travel"?!
