On most flights, there really isn’t much to see if you are looking out the airplane window.
Once the plane reaches cruising altitude, the view is usually nothing more than a sea of … well … sea; or a blanket of clouds. And that’s about it.
The exception for me, was flying over the Swiss Alps, en route from London to Venice. The view absolutely took my breath away!
However, I particularly love looking out the plane window after takeoff or when coming into land and getting a bird’s eye view of the city beneath.
Here are some of my favourites (in alphabetical order) from my various trips over the years:
Brisbane
On my last trip (to CopyCon in Sydney) I was excited to be able to pick out my suburb, and the main road near our house, from the air! Unfortunately I didn’t get a pic, but here’s another aerial view of Bris-Vegas.
London
I will never forget flying into London for the first time, and identifying various landmarks from the air – the Houses of Parliament, the Thames, etc. I was so excited I don’t think I actually took any photos! (Thank heavens for stock photos 😉 ).
Outback Australia
On our way home from Bali, we flew over the north west edge of Australia. It was night, so the only reason I could tell was the sparkle of a few lights way below us. Although I was sad our holiday was over, I was excited to know I was in Aussie airspace again! (It’s another stock photo, and of course we were much higher, but you get the idea …)
Pisa
After spending a couple of days exploring Pisa, I loved seeing all the red roofs from the air, the farmland surrounding the city, and the famous Leaning Tower (circled in red).
Singapore
I’d never seen so many ships in one place before – Singapore is certainly shipping central!
Sydney
I’m biased of course as a proud Australian, but I reckon our own Sydney offers one of the most amazing panoramas in the world for those flying in. I took this pic on my recent trip for CopyCon.
Venice
Flying into Venice was not what I expected AT ALL. This is what I saw … mainly because the airport is on the mainland, a bit of a drive from Venice. Instead, this is what the area beneath looked like!
It must be said however that I can probably count the number of plane trips I’ve done on both hands – so there are probably some amazing views that I’ve yet to see!
