Planning my Bedroom Makeover

Last week I shared about how the hubster has given our walk-in wardrobe a bit of a makeover.

Planning my Bedroom Makeover

Well, I Must Confess that now I’m looking at the rest of our bedroom and thinking that it also could do with a bit of an update …

Are Feature Walls Passé?

I’ve heard that feature walls are “so last decade darling”, but I still can’t help thinking the wall behind our bed needs something.

All the walls in our room – in fact our house – are off white, which is very versatile, but let’s face it, can be a bit bland.

So when is a feature wall not a feature wall? When it’s painted in a mellow neutral, only slightly darker than the main colour – like the shades of beige on the right.

Distressing the Furniture

I was given a full length cheval mirror recently – which is great, because I haven’t had a full length mirror since we moved here (coming up 5 years now!). BUT – It’s pine, and stands out like a sore thumb.

Having matchy-matchy furniture is also a thing of the past. So, the plan is to go for something different. I’m thinking of using chalk paint in a teal colour, and giving it a distressed finish. This should tone beautifully with our soft furnishings – the quilt cover, and the teal suede tub chair.

Small Updates

There are a couple of small changes that would really update the overall look.

I’m thinking of using teal or navy placemats on our bedside tables, for something a bit different.

I’ve already updated our touch lamps, which are nearly 25 years old. They used to have glass shades, which looked really dated, so we bought some linen-look ones instead. (I didn’t want to replace the actual lamps – we love having touch lamps and they seem to be hard to come by these days!)

The Bed

We’ve had our current quilt cover for about 4 years now, and I still love it! It’s also reversible, so I tend to use the dark side in winter, and the light side in summer, just for a change. I worked out that we’ve changed our bedspread/quilt cover 5 times during our marriage – so I guess you could say we have a mini bedroom makeover every five years!

We’ve updated the bed since the photo above was taken, to a sleigh bed (below). It was a bargain which we found at our favourite op shop for just under $100!

The Mattress

Although it’s fun to play with different looks, in my mind the most important item in the whole bedroom is: the bed, or more specifically, the mattress.

It’s said we spend around a third of our lives sleeping, so we should be making sure our mattress is comfortable and won’t give us backaches! Heading to a bedding specialist like Latex Mattress is a great way to ensure that you are making the right decision for this very important purchase.
